Born in Millville, Delaware, on July 5, 1932, Loretta was the youngest child of Fred and Oillie Drew, and the last surviving sibling among her many beloved brothers and sisters who preceded her in death. Married twice, she was the wife of Johnny Suarez and AlamChowdhury. From an early age, Aunt Ret demonstrated a strong will, a curious mind, and a heart devoted to service and learning.
She began her education at the Blackwater Colored School, a symbol of strength and resilience in segregated America, and continued through William Henry Middle School, Delaware State High School, and Delaware State College. Her passion for learning led her to pursue graduate studies at City College, Bank Street College, and Adelphi University, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in education.
Aunt Ret began her professional life as a nutritionist, but it was in the classroom where she truly found her purpose. She proudly served as an educator in the New York City Public School System, where she nurtured, inspired, and guided generations of students with compassion, patience, and wisdom. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched.
A gifted musician, Aunt Ret was rarely far from a piano. She played beautifully and shared her talent with others as a beloved teacher of music. Her creative spirit was also evident in her love of sewing, arts and crafts, and the special joy she found in making beautiful things for those she loved.
Aunt Ret is survived by her devoted daughter, Elizabeth Suarez-Gonzalez, her four loving grandchildren: Domenic Suarez, Johnny Suarez, Amor Suarez, and Oleeta Suarez, and her three great-grandchildren: Johnny Suarez Jr., Kal-El Suarez, and Kari Suarez. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who cherished her warmth, generosity, and strength of character.
Aunt Ret was the heart of her family and a pillar of her community. She was known for her intelligence, creativity, wit, and the steadfast love she gave to all who knew her. Whether at a family gathering, a church event, or behind the piano, Aunt Ret's presence brought light and joy.
She will be dearly missed but forever remembered, and her legacy of education, music, love, and perseverance will continue to echo in the lives of those she leaves behind.
Lovingly submitted, The Family
