Lorraine Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hope Memorial Chapel - Biddeford on Feb. 28, 2026.
Lorraine Lorette Smith (05/05/1961-02/23/2026)

Lorraine Lorette Smith grew up with an intimate closeness to God and music. She would be quoted stating "You pray twice when you sing." Lorraine escaped into her music and fell in love with the man of her life, William David Smith, or Bill, as he preferred. The two were inseparable; Wherever one was seen the other was soon to follow. They married in 1984, and soon thereafter, had a child named Thomas Jason Smith; Two years later another child would be born David Alan Smith. Lorraine lived her life for her family.

Recently preceded by her "Lil' Buddy", Paula Chabot, she is survived by her husband, Bill Smith, her three sons, David and Thomas Smith biologically as well as Paul Smith platonically, her sister, Rachel Crocker, her brother, Guy Chabot, her nieces, Ashley Mellen, Tiffany and Brooke Saucier, Emily and Sarah Chabot as well as her nephew Aaron Mellen. The story of Lorraine Smith is further passed on through her surviving grandchildren, Zachary, Zoe "Z", and Zander Smith, Irene and Johnathan Smith, as well as Colby Vaillancourt. Finally, her namesake will continue on with her surviving infant grandchild, Raine Jaycian Smith.

Lorraine enjoyed a life filled with an immeasurable passion for songwriting, music, and the love of her life, William Smith. Just a few steps away from swearing her vows as a nun, Lorraine instead chose a path of family, passing down her convictions to her survivors. Those who knew her would find solace and sanctuary within a woman of exponential love, forgiveness, and charity.

An unsung poet and composer of over 30 songs, her legacy would continue on in her music with such melodies as "Pain in My Heart", "Tiger Eyes", "Ode to Bill", "Pledge of Love", and "Lil' Brothah". She was one-third of Good Friendz along with her husband, Bill, and best friend, Sue Kelley. They were well known locally in the 90s for their music playing at various churches and pubs.

Lorraine's Wake will be open to the public from 5pm - 7pm on Wednesday, March 4th at the Hope Memorial in Biddeford, Maine. Floral donations may be sent directly there. The funerary mass will be held at St. Joseph's Cathedral also in Biddeford from 11am - 12pm followed by the funeral at St. Joseph's Cemetery and concluded with an open meal at St. Joseph's Cathedral once more. Financial contributions to help offset funerary costs may be sent to: ko-fi.com/goodfriendz

She was a beautiful soul and will be deeply missed. We love you, Mom.
