Lottie Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holloway Funeral Home - Salisbury on Feb. 17, 2024.
Lottie Jean Smith, age 97, died Monday, February 5, 2024. She was born on May 23, 1926, in Ocean City, Maryland to the late William Parker Thornton and Ethel Farlow. She was also raised by her stepfather, the late Burton Freeman. Lottie was preceded in death by her first husband, Woodrow Horton; second husband, Capt. Stanley Smith; her brother, Luther James Thornton; and three of her children, Michael Horton, Pamela Bishop, and Kenneth Horton.
She is survived by two of her children, Sheila Watson, and her husband David, of Pagosa Springs, Colorado and Sharon Peltier of Pocomoke City, Maryland; grandchildren, Robyn Julian, Linda Petek, Theresa Krauss, Kelly Catlin, Kristy Milkov, Michael Horton Jr., Kimberly Lewis, Ricky West, Dana Felton, Theodore Gearhardt, and Kyle Bishop; 24 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and her beloved cat Snuggles.
Lottie was someone who always enjoyed life to the fullest. Whether it was the many family vacations to Disney World, cruises, vacation houses, or the simpler things such as the evening trips to Assateague, Maryland to see the wild horses, trips to the boardwalk, trips to get ice cream, or the many dinners, she and her family enjoyed these adventures together. Lottie was a loving wife to her husband of 41 years, waterman Capt. Stanley Smith. She did the book work for his company Surf Clams which he ran for 20 years. She was an avid animal lover, especially cats, and had many pets over the course of her long life. She was a proud former resident of Ocean City, Maryland and often regaled her family with many stories of her life growing up there. Lottie was also a long-time resident of West Ocean City, Berlin, and, more recently, Salisbury, Maryland.
Lottie's kindness, lovingness, humor, and generosity will never be forgotten. Family gatherings will never be the same without her present. However, those who loved her will be eternally grateful to have had her in their lives for so long. The world was a much brighter place with her in it. Her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of her large family for many years to come.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Humane Society. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
