Lou (Arthur Louise) Carter (née Bird), age 84, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025, in Columbus, Texas. Born on October 9, 1940, in Goldthwaite, Texas, Lou lived a life marked by dedication to her family, her work, and the many people whose lives she touched along the way. Lou built a distinguished career as a department administrator at Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Her commitment to excellence and her ability to manage multiple departments with grace and professionalism left a lasting impression on colleagues and students alike. At the heart of Lou’s life was her beloved family. She shared a deep and enduring love with Les Carter, the love of her life. Lou married Owen on September 11, 1958, and just had their 67th anniversary
Together, they raised four children: Missy McClure and her spouse, Chris, of Kingsville, TX; Terry Carter and his spouse, Jody, of Lubbock, TX; Tim Carter and his spouse, Wanda, of Cridersville, OH; and their late daughter, Shari Gordon, and son-in-law, Mike. Lou was also a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, each of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Elzada and Arthur Bird; her brothers Charles Bird and Louis Bird; her sister Vermelle Sessions; as well as her daughter, Shari Gordon, and son-in-law Mike Gordon. Their memories remained close to Lou’s heart throughout her life. Outside of work and family responsibilities, Lou found joy in traveling, reading, and spending time with those she loved most.
Whether exploring new places or enjoying quiet moments with a good book or cherished company, she embraced life fully. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at TruCare Living Center in Columbus, TX, for their compassionate care. Lou was treated with dignity and gentleness throughout her time there. Special thanks are also given to the nurses and aides from Acara Hospice for their attentive support not only to Lou but also to the entire family during this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lou’s memory to Shriners Children’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital—organizations that reflect her lifelong compassion for others. May Lou’s memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
