Louis Benevides, a devoted soldier and beloved family man, passed away peacefully in hospice care on 10 July 2025.
Born on Sao Miguel's Island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores to an American mother who was living there at the time. Lou came to the United States when he was 18 months old and grew up in his mother's hometown of Fall River, Massachusetts where he attended elementary and high school, laying the foundation for what would become a remarkable life of service to his country.
Shortly after graduating high school Lou enlisted in the Air Force beginning a distinguished military career that would span over three decades. During his Air Force service, he courageously served one tour in Vietnam. After taking a brief hiatus from military life, Lou's calling to serve his country drew him back and he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he would spend the next thirty years.
His Army career took him across the United States and around the world including multiple overseas assignments in Germany and Italy, as well as two tours in Korea. These experiences shaped him into a worldly and dedicated soldier who understood the importance of global service and commitment.
Lou's final duty station was Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, where he served with distinction as the Garrison Command Sergeant Major until his retirement in 2001. This position reflected the respect and trust his fellow soldiers and superiors placed in his leadership and character.
Throughout his adult life and well into retirement, Lou embodied the military ethos "once a soldier, always a soldier." He remained proud of his service and often said without hesitation that he would do it all over again. A passionate advocate for military service, he consistently encouraged younger generations to consider a military career, though he was often disappointed that his enthusiasm didn't often translate into recruits.
Lou's legacy of service extends beyond his military accomplishments. He was a loving husband, stepfather, brother, and uncle who valued family as much as he valued his country.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Della Benevides; his beloved dog, Moose; his step-daughter Jessica Bullion Danz and her husband Brian; his younger brother Ray Benevides; his nephew Eric Benevides and his wife Anna; his niece Christen Antonio and her husband Jason; and their children Zack, Kohle, and Landon.
Louis Benevides lived a life defined by service, honor, country and an unwavering dedication to both his country and his family. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him, and his example of selfless service will not be forgotten.
Funeral services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veterans Administration in his honor.
