Peter Charles Young, age 65, passed away on March 11, 2026 at home in Belmar, New Jersey.
Peter was born in Kearny, New Jersey, on August 6, 1960 to Loretta and Dr. Peter C Young. He graduated from Kearny High School in 1978 then from Monmouth University in 1982 with a degree in biology and chemistry. He subsequently promptly fled North Jersey for his beloved Belmar. Shortly after, he met and married Maria McMenaman Young from Spring Lake, New Jersey. Together, they raised their family in Belmar.
Peter was a man of many interests, including surfing, gardening, and playing bass guitar in punk rock bands. He loved to fish, swim, and run races, including 10 marathons. Surfing was a particular passion that led to countless travel adventures, including being a founding member of the Belmar Water Rescue team and volunteer for many years. Peter was an enthusiastic hobby farmer with a prolific organic vegetable garden, goats, chickens, ducks, and other farming endeavors. Peter's other passions included cooking, most notably excellent seafood dishes. He had eclectic tastes musically, but was most passionate about the band TOOL. Peter owned and operated his own painting and contracting business, locally, for over 30 years. His clients often became friends.
The most beloved aspect of Peter's life was being a father "Pop" to his three sons and grandfather "Popsicle" to six little grandchildren. Peter was a much loved friend, brother, and neighbor.
Peter was pre-deceased by his parents, Loretta Nemanis and Peter C Young sr., and his in-laws Jack and Bunni McMenaman.
He is survived by his sister, Paulette D. Young, his wife of 38 years, Maria McMenaman Young, and by his sons; Austin Charles McMenaman Young, partner Rosaleen Veilleux, their children, Kashmir Orion, and Freya Constance. Kahle Evan McMenaman Young, partner Claudia Toole, and their two daughters Lola Lavender and Bonnie May. Peter Owen McMenaman Young, wife, Karis (Walborn) McMenaman Young, their children, Malachi Owen, and Ziggy Amore. He will be missed by many, most notably, these surviving family members.
We will be honoring Peter with a Catholic Funeral mass at Saint Rose Church in Belmar New Jersey this Friday, March 20 at 10:30 AM. There will be a memorial paddle out in Belmar to be announced when the Atlantic warms up.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Surfer's Healing, an organization that Peter loved to volunteer with.
The Young family is grateful to the wonderful community who loved, supported, cared and prayed for us during Peter's illness. Thank you all.
