POLAND — Louis “Lou” J. DeMarinis Sr. died early Monday morning, Aug. 5, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital. Lou was born Dec. 31, 1931, in Youngstown, a son of the late Louis and Angeline Jeswald DeMarinis. He was a graduate of Boardman High School. He continued his education at Youngstown College, where he worked to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in business. He was a proud member of Alpha Phi Delta fraternity during and after his time as a student. In 2023, he was recognized for his contributions to his beloved fraternity.
Lou proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his service, Lou worked as a data center manager at Republic Steel and LTV. He was known for his professionalism and commitment.
Lou married Marie E. Murphy, the love of his life, May 17, 1958. Together, they raised three children and were active in every aspect of their lives. In addition to his professional pursuits, Lou was proud of his active role in St. Christine Parish. He participated in numerous church programs such as Pre-Cana, and RCIA, and served as a Eucharistic minister and on the parish council. Additionally, he was involved in the festival raffle and organizing bus trips to Notre Dame. Lou also enjoyed his time serving as a member of the Curbstone Coaches and the Youngstown Vocation Support Society.Lou found joy in various hobbies, including golfing, watching sporting events, playing bridge, going to the theater and smoking his “smelly” cigars and snacking. When his wife let him in the kitchen, he was known for his Sunday sauce and “eggy Wednesdays.” Those who knew him simply enjoyed his calm presence and witty sense of humor.
Lou leaves behind a legacy that will be forever cherished by his surviving family members, including his daughter, Deborah (Charles) LoDico; daughter, Jenette (John Storey) Garbarz; son, Louis J. (Lori) DeMarinis III; grandchildren, Louis (Allison) DeMarinis, Michele (James) LeMari, Nicholas (Sarah) DeMarinis, Andrew Padach, Elyse DeMarinis, Maria (Patrick) Russo, Melissa (Donald) Durkin and Salvatore Garbarz; and great-grandchildren, Isabella, Nicholas, Moira, Emma, Connor, Ori, Lucia, Willow, Aven and Francesco; along with many other relatives and friends who mourn their loss.
Lou and Marie, and daughter, Jenette, opened their house to Phantom hockey players Evan Case, Michael Maltese and Owen Meyers; Ulster project teens / adults, LesleyAnne Roddy, Susannah Wilson, Jennie Woods, Anna Aitken and Niall McGourty; Japanese exchange student, Risa Shibata Bonanno; and Brazilian exchange student, Pedro Koch Goede.
Preceding him in death were Lou’s parents, Louis and Angeline DeMarinis; and his beloved wife, Marie E. Murphy; along with his brothers, Paul and Donald DeMarinis. Honoring Lou’s selflessness, the gift of life was shared through organ donation. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
A visitation service honoring Lou will take place 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, at St. Christine Church, Youngstown, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. The Mass will be live streamed on the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home's Facebook page.
Memorial contributions may be made to Curbstone Coaches, 4565 Burkey Road, Austintown, OH 44515, in Lou’s memory.
