Lucia Di Meglio

Lucia Di Meglio, 89, died on July 25, 2024 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by the circle of love of her family. She was the last surviving member of eleven children; born in Fiaiano, Ischia, Italy, of Antonio Buono and Maria Mattera. As a seamstress, Lucia worked for Dietz and Company and then Dooney and Burke until retirement. She was predeceased by her husband Aniello Di Meglio, whom she married in 1957.
Lucia was an avid gardner who could make anything grow. She canned her own tomatoes so she could make the best pasta sauce for her family. She enjoyed keeping up with the news and read Italian and English newspapers every day. A sports enthusiast, she enjoyed watching the New York Yankees, the Brooklyn Nets, the New York Rangers and the Italian Soccer team Napoli.
Lucia was a devoted mother, a loving grandmother and a good friend. Her Catholic faith guided her life with the motto of "we go forward as God wants." She had a special devotion to her native church in Italy, the Church of Monte Rotaro. Growing up, she would always make sure that the church Altar was always decorated by the most beautiful flowers, for the Greater Glory of God. Lucia's greatest joy was her family. Her children were the flame of her heart and her grandchildren were the heart beats.
She is survived by daughter Fran Di Meglio, daughter Maria (Pasquale) Funicello, and son John (Michelle) Di Meglio. She was very proud of her grandchildren and loved to talk about her "three Musketeers and her Princess." Giuseppe (Joe) Funicello, Elvira (Nick) Marchelos, Derek Di Meglio and Zachary Di Meglio. For all card occasions, Lucia wrote her grandchildren loving poetry verses in Italian uniquely tailored to their individual personalities. She taught them to be strong, face the world with confidence and to not be afraid. All her conversations ended with "God be with you."
She taught her children and grandchildren to give thanks for all of God's blessings in their lives and to cherish the gift of family. Lucia leaves behind to her beloved children Fran, Maria, Pasquale, John and Michelle; and to her adored grandchildren Giuseppe, Elvira, Nick, Derek and Zachary - a never ending circle of love.
