Lucien Bright Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Lucien J. Bright, a beloved member of the Washington community, announce his passing from this world Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving children. Born April 18, 1936, in Washington, Lucien lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication. A proud veteran, Lucien honorably served in the United States Army before embarking on a career that would define his commitment to his community. In the late 1960s, he joined the Washington City Police Force, where he devoted himself to protecting and serving the people of Washington. His tenure as a juvenile crime officer beginning in 1976 saw him champion innovative programs like the "Scared Straight and Save a Juvenile Program," which he helped establish in 1985. Lucien's impact was significant, both in practical law enforcement and in mentoring young minds; he always gave it to the kids straight. One of the kids he helped years ago said that he would not be the man he is today if it weren't for "Officer Bright". Lucien's remarkable career culminated in his retirement from the police department in 1992, upon which he took up the role of chief of the Washington City Parking Authority. His contributions to the community did not go unnoticed; he was honored as "Citizen of the Year" by Mayor Sonny Spossey, a testament to his tireless dedication. He was trained through the FBI Police Forensics as a hypnotist, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to serving others. A man full of life, Lucien was the life of every party and had an infectious passion for sports-especially those connected to his hometown. He cheered fervently for W&J College and the Washington High School Prexies, embodying a spirit of pride for his community that resonated with those around him. Lucien graduated from Washington High School Class of 1954 and held a special place in his heart for both his family and his community. He loved spending time in Florida during the winter months and cherished the moments he spent bass fishing with his son. His greatest joy, however, came from being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He looked upon his children, Missy (the late Ray) Andrews, Cathy (Jeff) Buck, and Lucien (Dana) Bright, with immense pride, as well as his grandchildren, Michael (Jessica Ritchey) Andrews, Jennifer (Bratche) Eldred, Matthew (Mindi) Andrews, Corey, and Hannah Buck, who brought light and laughter into his life. His great- grandchildren, Isabelle, Noah, Ella, Zayne, Zeke, Maddox Andrews and Lorelei Eldred, held a special place in his heart as the legacy that would carry on his spirit. Lucien was predeceased by his loving wife, Janice L. Watters Bright, whom he married in 1958 and cherished until her passing May 22, 2001. He also mourned the passing of his dear companion of 24 years, Becky Griffith, who left this world November 30, 2025. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Lucien and Gertrude Brock Bright. In these last moments, the family extends heartfelt gratitude to all care providers at Paramount Hospice and his personal caregivers for providing our father the best care imaginable throughout his journey. Friends and family are invited from 12 noon until the time of a funeral service at 4 p.m. Saturday, January 31, in the William G. Neal Funeral Home, 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Burial will be private at Washington Cemetery.

Lucien was a pillar in Washington! I originally knew him from baseball and later as a police man. He would show up at my father's shoe shop [W & J Shoe Repair]. I considered it an honor to know him!

Jan. Paramount; dining room

January 29, 2026

I started working at Paramount (dining room) and Lucian and I just clicked right away, I always snuck him extra snacks, I would push him to his room (I wasn't really allowed to but I knew when he was ready to leave) and we talked the whole way, made sure he had a water/pop opened and ready to go for him. I'd sit there and listen to his stories, with a big smile on my face. He loved his family and he will be missed! My thoughts and prayers will be with you
