It is with great love and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lucila Peña Cortinas Sinclair, who left this world peacefully on August 11, 2025, at the age of 88. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Lucila lived a life defined by compassion, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community.
Born on May 13, 1937, Lucila's life was one of service and dedication to others. She attended nursing school in California before returning to
Del Rio, Texas, where she began her career as a nurse at the Del Rio Hospital. She went on to serve alongside Dr. Fermín Calderón for over 40 years, where her kindness and skill touched countless lives. While working with Dr. Calderón, Lucila achieved her longtime dream of opening a beauty shop "Lucy's Cut and Curl" next to the doctor's office, a venture that showcased her determination, creativity, and love for people. Later, she continued her medical career as a nurse with Dr. Manuel Martínez in urology and worked with chiropractor Kent Lowery for three years.
In 1956, Lucila married José Alfonso Cortinas Sr. beginning a 57-year marriage filled with love, partnership, and adventure until his passing in 2013. Together they raised four children, and Lucila took great joy in being a devoted mother. She created lasting family traditions, from camping trips to Lake Amistad and Rough Canyon to road trips and travel adventures that broadened her children's horizons and filled their childhoods with treasured memories.
In 2015, Lucila was blessed to find love again when she married Ralph Sinclair Jr. They shared 10 happy years of marriage, built an unbreakable bond, and lived their days to the fullest with long daily walks, drives around town, and visits to their favorite places to eat, creating joyful memories together until his passing in March 2025.
Lucila was a vibrant and social woman who believed in staying connected to her community. She was an active member of The Good Sam's Club, The Elite Club, and the San Felipe Lioness Club. Her many hobbies included gardening, sewing, crocheting, quilting, collecting elephants, and enjoying meals out. She also loved traveling and was always eager to explore new places, often with her loved ones by her side.
She is survived by her children José A. Cortinas Jr. (Brenda), Cynthia Cortinas Pruneda (Gerry), and Christine Cortinas Huntley (Bill), her sisters Irene Peña Cervantes and Socorro Peña Martínez, her grandchildren Erik Jaso, Lucilla Irene Ortiz, Jennifer Lynn Cortinas Kilobassa, Selina Andrade Jaramillo, Anita Pruneda Mariner, José A.
