Early years, Lucinda and her family moved to
Columbia, TN. where she attended Columbia High School. Lucinda was involved in basketball and was actually very athletic even as an adult she was very good at softball. In high school she was one of the main Majorette's that led the marching band with her baton twirling, combining dance, and gymnastics while using a single baton or multiple batons. The Columbia High School Majorettes also performed with Fire Twirling Batons and it was very spectacular! Couldn't you just see her twisting and twirling her baton high into the sky and lit on fire, catching it, and twirling it behind her back while spinning around tossing it up again and again! One day her granddaughter Ashley was playing with a baton. She said "let me see that baton Ash cat" and grandma showed off twirling it even at the age of 75, saying "Ash Cat, you didn't think Grandma could do that did you?" During her high school years, she worked at the Sundown Drive-In Theater and Jerry Lee Lewis and his band had just appeared on The Steve Allen show that evening and then they were scheduled to go to the Drive-In after the show for a fan fair. That evening during the Rock and Roll Show, her boss asked her if she would go ask Jerry Lee Lewis on the band's next break, if they were finished performing, if he would come out and sign autographs for his fans. She then went up to Jerry Lee Lewis and repeated what her boss had said and Jerry just looked at her and jerk his head to the side and said "Honey they just might maul me to death" then she took a good look at him and said "Well you ain't no Elvis Presley'' and then she boldly slung her head back and walked right out of the room like he was not worth her time. Then before you knew it Jerry was out there meeting fans and signing away.
A couple of years later Denna met Isaac Ralph Sewell, III and they were married in 1959. They lived in
Nashville, TN, Baton Rouge, LA and then moved to
Pensacola, FL. After 15 years of marriage, it ended in divorce. Then she met Gene Morgan Williams and they married in 1976 and were married for 42 yrs. until his death in 2018. Denna volunteered at West Pensacola Elementary school for 6 years until her youngest son, Gene went on to middle school. The school's Teacher/Parent Representative who was in charge, Linda Kirkland loved her and said she was The Best Parent Volunteer she had ever known in all her years. Then Denna went on to work in childcare, the center was called Busy Bee and she had worked there for many years, attended continuous education, acquiring many certificates, and recertifications up to when she retired at age 72. Denna was a care giver to many infants and she loved all of her babies and they loved their Ms. Denna! This was her passion even while in the Retirement home she would tell her son and daughter "I've got to get back to work to take care of my babies and they need me!" In her spare time she was at church every time the doors were open. Denna helped clean and made sure it would be ready for Wednesday night bible study. Denna would volunteer her time to Loaves and Fishes Kitchen helping feed the homeless. She was well known for her homemade biscuits and gravy. Denna managed for years to juggle between, taking care of her family, being active in her church, and working a full time job taking care of her babies at Busy Bee. Denna would go home on her lunch break and start supper so it would be ready for the family when everyone came home in the evenings. Helping the homeless was the greatest reward of all. Denna was a giver not a taker and would tell her daughter and son to always make someone laugh at least once a day because we don't know where their walk in life was or what they were going through. That love was the best medicine of all. Lucinda would want to leave you with a message: "Love your family all the days of your life and serve thy Lord thy God full and whole heartedly and live your life to the fullest each and every day. Also, don't hold on to hurt, anger, or pain, and be kind to everyone you meet. You never allow anyone to be above you, but our God and make him first in your life". Belinda, her daughter will tell you, "If mommy were here today she'd ask each of you for a hug and then would ask if you could do something for her", in her laughing voice. "I can do it better than you. That's right!" Then she would leave you saying "I love you and God bless you all."
