Lucy Deaton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Knox Funeral Home on Mar. 7, 2026.
Mrs. Lucy Mills Deaton, 84, of Barbourville, entered her heavenly home on Saturday morning, March 7, 2026 with the same grace and quiet strength that defined her life. Born on November 15, 1941, at Mills, Lucy was a shining light from the very beginning, a light that continued to glow brightly in the lives of all who knew and loved her.

Lucy was a devoted mother to her three daughters, who lovingly believe she "hung the moon", Brenda Daniels and Richard of Barbourville, Lori Stewart and Crit of Corbin and Jessica Epperson and Dustin of London. To her girls, she was home, she was comfort and she was the steady foundation that carried them through life.

The greatest joy of Lucy's life was being a grandmother. Her five beautiful grandchildren, Nathan Carter, Jaden Stewart, Makenna Stewart, Evan Epperson and her true pride and joy, Lexi Kate Epperson, were the sparkle in her eyes and the song in her heart. This past year, she was also blessed with a bonus grandson, Jordan, who brought her immense happiness and laughter. Her love for her grandchildren was boundless, unwavering and proudly spoken of to anyone who would listen.

Lucy had a special zest for the simple joys of life. She loved shopping and was always on the hunt for a good bargain. Saturday mornings she was often found carefully scanning the weekly sale ads. Friday nights were reserved for one of her favorite traditions, shopping trips to Marshall's with Lexi Kate. Those evenings were filled with laughter, sweet treats and memories that will forever be cherished. She was always ready for a shopping trip and never met a dessert she didn't love. If it was sweet, she was smiling.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob Deaton; her parents, Albert and Hester Mills; her brothers, Lewis Mills and wife, Nina, Charles Mills and wife, Doris, and J. C. Mills; her nephew, Doug Mills and her cousin and very best friend, Zelma Hubbard.

She is also survived by her sister, Pauline Miller and husband, James, of Davis Bend; her brothers, C. A. Mills and wife, Jackie, of Barbourville and James David Mills and wife, Judy, of Barbourville; along with a host of special nieces and nephews, whom she cherished dearly. Lucy shared a lifelong, treasured friendship with Terry Herb "Tim" of Anderson, IN and was blessed with special cousins who were more like sisters, Kaye Carter and Jerri Sidel. Their bonds were a testament to the way Lucy loved – deeply, faithfully and for a lifetime.

Lucy was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend and above all, she was a steadfast Christian whose faith guided her every step. She found joy in serving others and lived her life as a reflection of Christ's love. Her smile had the power to brighten the darkest day and no one ever left her home hungry. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, laughter and full plates, just one of the many ways she showed her love.

Known for her spotless home and unmatched work ethic, Lucy took great pride in her work as a house cleaner. She believed that even the smallest acts of service mattered and she lived that belief every day.

For the past 15 months, Lucy bravely faced her battle with dementia. Her family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the incredible staff at Shepherd's Cove at Laurel Heights. The love and compassion shown to Lucy during her time there will never be forgotten. The caregivers became more than staff, they became family. We extend a heartfelt thank you to Tina, Laura, Mary, Sabrina, Sandy, Emily, Destiny, Mandie, Elizabeth and Carly. You not only cared for our mother with tenderness and dignity, but you also carried our family through some of our darkest days. Your kindness will forever be a part of her story.

Lucy was the perfect blend of kindness and toughness. She was gentle yet strong, humble yet unwavering. Her heart was truly made of gold. Though our hearts ache in her absence, we rejoice knowing she is whole and at peace, surely walking the streets of gold she so often sang and prayed about.

Her legacy is one of faith, family, hard work and unconditional love. And while we will miss her deeply, we carry her light within us always. We can only imagine that somewhere in Heaven, Lucy and her beloved cousin and best friend Zelma have already found the best shops and sweetest desserts, together again, laughing and enjoying the shopping trips they loved so much.

Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Thursday, March 12 at 12 Noon with Rev. Scott Phipps and Rev. Charles Carnes officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be her beloved nephews, Chris Mills, Steven Mills, C. A. Jr. Mills, Johnny Mills, Charles Jr. Mills and Michael Mayo, each serving as a tribute to the strong family legacy she cherished so deeply.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday between 6 and 8 P.M. and Thursday prior to the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
