It is with much sorrow that the family of Luigia DiDomizio announces that she went on to her heavenly rest on Monday, September 2, 2024.
Luigia (Luisa) DiDomizio (née Grassi) was born on April 20, 1936 in Madonna di Pugliano, a small village in the hills of central Italy, just outside of the Republic of San Marino.
She was the fourth of five children (her late siblings Vito, Maria, Rosa and Giuseppe) to Michele and Ida Grassi.
In her youth, Luisa worked in Rome as the governess for the family of the Canadian Consulate to Italy.
On February 9, 1961, she married Gino DiDomizio (deceased) and moved to the town of Jesi, not far from the Adriatic Sea, where they resided for 13 years. During that time they had three children Franco, Michael, and Marco.
In 1974, the entire family emigrated to the United States and settled in Yonkers, New York with other family members.
In the years that followed, Luisa worked in the garment industry as a seamstress for several years. She eventually switched jobs and worked in the food service department at the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, New York until she retired in 2009.
Luisa's crowning achievement in life was having three sons who attended and graduated from universities with advanced degrees. She and her late husband worked hard to put their sons through college - as the first generation to accomplish this in their family. She was incredibly proud of them and their successful careers.
She was a wonderful cook, delighting her family and friends with many home made meals and treats, and loved hosting holiday celebrations. She had a green thumb and enjoyed tending to her garden for which she also received an award from the City of Yonkers Parks Department, presented to her by the mayor. Her favorite hobby was caring for her home, she worked hard to keep it pristine and was very proud of it. She also enjoyed watching telenovelas in the evenings, and then discussing the dramatic plots and characters with her friends.
She visited Italy many times, and also enjoyed spending winter vacations with her husband Gino and other family members and friends in Acapulco, Mexico.
Luisa's family Franco & Stella, Michael & Joann, Marco & Angelo, grandchildren Frank, Kristina & Richie, Thomas & Maria, and great-granddaughter Evelyn, as well as many other close friends will greatly miss her joyful and positive outlook, as well as her sense of kindness and humor.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The family will be present on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024 from 4-8 PM at Ruggiero & Sons, Inc., 732 Yonkers Avenue- Yonkers, New York 10704 (914) 375-1400 www.FRSWFH.com. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Thursday, September 5th, 2024 at Saint Ann's Church- Smart Avenue & College Place- Yonkers, New York 10704. Following the Mass, Luigia will be laid to rest at Ferncliff Cemetery, 280 Secor Road- Hartsdale, New York 10530.
