Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anders-Detweiler Funeral Home & Crematory - Souderton on Jan. 4, 2023.
Luis Antonio Vélez Méndez, 76, of
Souderton, PA went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 23, 2022 at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
He was the loving husband of Carmen Montes Soto for 50 years. Luis was born in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico to the late Alonso Vélez and the late Rosa Méndez.
He graduated from Fernando Suria Chavez High School, class of 1964. Luis graduated from Universidad Catolica de Puerto Rico.
He was a member of Parroquia Nuestra Señora De La Victoria in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico and a member of Iglesia Menonita Ebenezer in
Souderton, PA.
Despite spending much of the past six months in and out of the hospital, he never lost his sense of humor. Throughout his journey, he cracked jokes with his grown children, made silly faces with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and even pulled some light-hearted pranks on the nurses who called him 'Papi'. He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Luis loved auto mechanics, auto-mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, medical journals and new scientific discoveries. He was an avid reader who enjoyed old cowboy novels, auto-mechanic journals, history magazines, newspapers, and anything that could expand his mind. He loved dominoes, baseball and boxing. He took pride in his home, from learning to install hardwood floors to re-building the HVAC system. Luis was able to take on new projects and figure out how to make them come to life.
In addition to his many accomplishments on this earth, his biggest pride and joy was being a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He loved teaching his children and grand-children new ways of doing things and taking on new challenges. He loved travelling with his wife Carmen and returned to Puerto Rico every year to spend time with his siblings. He was so intelligent and was able to absorb and synthesize information so easily. He had a photographic memory and could recount information verbatim. He was always open to helping others, no matter if they were friends or strangers. His generosity was boundless and freely given.
His favorite sermon was Psalms 23:
His Saint was San Martín de Porras.
In addition to his wife, Carmen, Luis is survived by his three children, Yellyann Vélez of
Souderton, PA, Linnete Vélez-McKnight & husband, Gilbert VI of Lansdale, PA, Luis M. Vélez & wife, Heather of Shamokin, PA; his nine grandchildren Javier Castellano, Gabrielle McHale, Christian Vélez, Laysha Castellano, Nicholas Vélez, Brandon Vélez, G. Chicago, Illinois and his brother, Manuel (Pepin) Vélez of Barceloneta, Puerto Rico.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Alizer (Ali) Vélez.
He taught his children about love and how to love deeply. His last words on this earth were of his undying love for his wife Carmen. He will be missed dearly by everyone his beautiful soul touched!
