Sharon L. Hunsberger, 86, of Souderton, PA; formerly of Harleysville, PA went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at Souderton Mennonite Homes, surrounded by his family in song as he was welcomed into heaven.
Sharon was the loving husband of Gladys C. (Allebach) Hunsberger for 64 years. He was born "Max Sharon Bair" in Saxton, PA to Charles and Sarah Bair, the youngest of 9 children. At 9 months old, he was given up to The Messiah Orphanage in Mount Joy and later adopted and treasured by the late Peter L. Hunsberger and the late Viola (Groff) Hunsberger.
Sharon attended Franconia Mennonite School. He worked as a carpenter for his family business, Peter L. Hunsberger Builders in Franconia, PA. Later, he was a co-owner of Peter L. Hunsberger & Son in Harleysville. After becoming incorporated into Hunsberger Builders, Inc. in Harleysville, he enjoyed working alongside of his son Galen who now carries on the family business.
Sharon was a member of Salford Mennonite Church where he served in various roles over the years such as youth leader, music ministry and service projects. More recently, he attended Covenant Community Fellowship where he found great joy playing harmonica with the worship team led by his grandchildren.
Sharon had a big heart for helping others and formerly served as a coordinator and project manager with Mennonite Disaster Services. He was involved with the MAMA project in Honduras and many other service trips to various locations. He was also a member of the Harleysville Fire Company, Harleysville Ambulance and served on the board.
Sharon had a God-given talent and passion for music. He loved singing, playing guitar and harmonica. He enjoyed traveling and singing with various groups over the years, including the Hunsberger Family Singers, BASICS, VICOUNTS, Salford Bluegrass, & The Harmenaires. He loved making music with his family which now includes his grandchildren. He also loved singing with his wife and brought much joy to the local retirement communities. Sharon enjoyed woodworking in his shop, creating, hunting, and his expansive Bachmann G-scale layout of model trains. He also loved traveling and going to the cabin in the mountains with his family. He enjoyed attending car shows and winning some awards with his 1954 & 1960 DeSoto classic cars. He also refurbished a 1952 Chevy Panel truck, in honor of the year his father Peter started the family business with a similar truck. Sharon enjoyed driving his classic cars and panel truck in the annual Skippack Parade.
Sharon was a warm, caring, kind, creative, fun-loving, quick witted man who had a great sense of humor. In light of his own personal adoption story, he extended this same gift by opening his heart and home to 2 additional children and loved them as his own. He was a man who loved the Lord and repeatedly told his family how much he loved them. Despite his many health and life challenges, he remained steadfast in his faith, swift with humor and demonstrated a life committed to serving and loving others well.
In addition to his wife, Gladys, he is survived by his son, Galen L. Hunsberger & wife, Connie of Telford, PA; his two daughters, Mary "Jane" Grossenbacher of West Chester, PA, Stacy L. Hostetter & husband, Greg of New Holland, PA; his 10 grandchildren, Tyler Hunsberger & wife, Kaci of Harleysville, PA, Colin Hunsberger of Palmer, AK, Logan Hunsberger of Telford, PA, Lanae Hunsberger of Telford, PA, Stacey Lee Hunsberger of Reading, PA, Crystal Zavaleta & husband, Eric of Coatesville, PA, Paul "Jordan" Grossenbacher of West Chester, PA, Micah Hostetter & wife, Melissa of New Holland, PA, Austin Hostetter of New Holland, PA, Mataya Hostetter & fiancé, Addison Bunkoff of New Holland, PA; his seven great-grandchildren – Tucker, Lyla, Holden, Carmelo, Hugo, Luis, & Mia; and his brother, Vernon L.
