Obituary
On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, Luke Jonathon Sibley, beloved son of Jonathon and Denise, and cherished brother to Grant, passed away unexpectedly.
Luke was born in Palos Heights on April 3, 2004. He attended Incarnation Catholic School K-7, where he developed friendships to last a lifetime. There he received his religious education, was baptized, received the sacrament of Holy Communion, and was confirmed. In his 8th grade year Luke attended Nathan Hale followed by Alan B. Shepard High School, where he earned his diploma and was to graduate this Spring.
Luke was a very active young man and enjoyed sports and the outdoors. Luke made many long-term friends through his activities. He was active in Cub Scouts, enjoying campouts and Pinewood Derbies. He played on soccer teams every year throughout Grammar School at Incarnation, Crestwood Soccer Club, Our Lady of the Woods, and Nathan Hale. In 2014, with the Crestwood Soccer Club, his team finished as Runner Up in the Championship game. During his 8th grade year at Hale his team won the Championship, breaking a long-held streak by their rival. Incarnation Soccer was the hallmark of Luke's experience, with parent coaches and families who nurtured character and sportsmanship. His team of lifelong friends earned the Southwest Catholic Association Jr. Varsity Boys Runner Up in 2017. He enjoyed several years of playing in a League at Southwest Ball Hockey, where he was known for his speed on the rink, powerful wrist shot, earning game balls, acting as substitute goalie, and becoming Assistant Captain for the team. Correctly spelling the word "prodigious" placed Luke first at his 2018 school spelling bee. He advanced to represent Incarnation Catholic School at the 41st Annual Lenon Wisdom Memorial Spelling Bee for regional schools. In High School, Luke ran on the Cross-Country team and registered some of the historically best times for his class years.
Luke was dedicated to a healthy lifestyle. He worked out frequently at the Crestwood Rec Center and various other fitness centers. He enjoyed long walks in the neighborhood and in the local Forest Preserves referring to this practice as "taking a forest bath", especially at Swallow Cliff with his brother Grant, and at Lake Katherine with his mother Denise. Luke was one with nature, often sitting to look out over the lake to enjoy the wildlife and a sunset. He enjoyed long distance bike rides with his father Jon, and with his friends, taking one adventurous ride from Crestwood to Lemont and back with his biking buddy Ryan. Luke valued long car rides with his mom as they talked and travelled, often with a stop at two of his favorite places Culver's and Smoothie King.
Luke had grown to be a compassionate young man with a quick wit, wisdom beyond his years, and a loving heart. He told us often he was grateful to have us as his family and he loved us. We loved him more than words can express and know we are forever bound by our love for him. Blessed with wonderful grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins, Luke looked forward to family gatherings. Especially holidays spent at his Godparents home. If you were family, a friend, even an acquaintance, he loved and accepted you. Luke was a no-nonsense kind of guy. He did not judge, he let go easily, he was peaceful, and friendly. Confident, he would often strike up a conversation with a fellow student, gym member, or vacationer. He would ask questions and really try to get to know you, give great advice, and care. Full of faith, Luke believed in the promise of eternal life. Having to say goodbye is so very, very hard, but the pain makes us realize how truly blessed we were to have had him in our lives.
Luke is survived by his parents Jonathon and Denise, his brother Grant, and the family's pet Havanese Lexi, his constant and loving companion, who Luke called "The Baby".
Luke is further survived by his Grandmother Holly Gobeille; Great Uncle Dr. John Giovinco and Great Aunt Linda Reid-Kilzer; Godparents Uncle Joseph (Jory) Gobeille; Uncles David Gobeille and Thomas Greaves; Aunts Jennifer (Michael) Carroll, Debra and Cynthia Sibley; Cousins Hanna (Adam) Zimmerman, Jacob Gobeille, Kevin and Daniel Carroll, Joshua, Benjamin, and Rachel Sibley, Sarah (Colin) Schepp, Matt (Alexis) Peter, Melissa (Brandon) Bautz, Lois Packard, Cindy (Tom) Berens, Kathy Carlson, Tamara Harris, and Rebecca, Bonnie, and Andrew (Chelsea) Greaves.
Luke was preceded in death by his maternal Grandfather Joseph Andre Gobeille; paternal Grand Parents William and Lois Sibley; Aunts Mary Anderson, Delores Sibley, and Kathryn Greaves; and Uncles Stephen and James Sibley.
A Visitation will be held at the Becvar & Son Funeral Home, 5539 W. 127th Street, Crestwood, Illinois, on Thursday, May 18th, 2023, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Incarnation Catholic Church, 5757 W. 127th Street, Crestwood, Illinois, on Friday, May 19th, 2023, at 11:00 a.m.
