Lula Jackson

63 years and 28 days ago on a breezy Tuesday afternoon, Hurricane Carla blew into Asheville, NC and so did Lula Bell Nance.
Lula was born to the late Tommie Lee Nance, Sr. and Luna Shipp Nance. Lula attended the public schools and was a graduate of Asheville high school Class of 1979. She was active in the Cougar band and excelled as the drum majorette. Lula loved music and regularly performed in talent competitions. She was awarded a music scholarship to Mars Hill University, but decided to start a family instead. Lula was a faithful member of Worldwide Missionary Baptist Church and served on the choir and anniversary committee. Lula loved her pastor and church and when she could not attend, her heart was always there. Lula was preparing her song on Friday night, September 27, 2024 when hurricane Helene blew into Asheville and she ascended to her heavenly home.
In addition to her parents, Lula was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, paternal grandmother and father; sisters, Pearl Carroll and Rachel Tinsley; brother-in-law, Royce Tinsley.
Lula loved her family dearly and surviving family to cherish her memory include daughters, Lena Wittenberg (Kenneth) and Nichole Mayfield; grandchildren, Tiyara, and Tyree; sister, Mildred Nance Carson; brother, Tommy Lee Nance, Jr. (Mary); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial service will be 12:00pm Saturday, October 5, 2024 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service.
