Reflections of Life Lura Jane Deville
Lura Jane Deville, a woman of faith, fortitude, and profound influence, entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 25, 2025, at the age of 93. A beloved matriarch, faithful servant, and passionate educator, she leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, wisdom, and a lifetime of service.
Born in Georgia and raised in Tennessee, Lura was nurtured in a home where strength and character were daily lessons. After graduating from Tennessee State University, her life's journey led her to Kansas, where she followed her calling to teach and poured herself into the lives of countless students. Her impact as an educator extended beyond the classroom, earning her national recognition and honors in Washington, D.C. for her outstanding contributions to education and community uplift.
It was in Kansas that she met the love of her life, the late Paul James Deville. Their union was one of love, mutual respect, and a shared devotion to God. Together, they raised a family guided by faith and purpose.
Lura was a proud and longstanding member of Metropolitan Baptist Church for over 60 years. She faithfully served as a Deaconess, a prayer warrior, and a spiritual anchor for many. Her devotion to the Lord and her church community was unwavering, and her presence in the pews and in people's lives was a source of strength and encouragement.
Lura was preceded in death by her parents Charles White and Cora Locke White, her beloved siblings Rev Albert White, Roy White, Charles "C.R." White, Frank White, Naomi White, Dorothy Binns, Rachel Strickland, Edna Green and Leon White; as well as her husband of over sixty years, Paul James Deville and her granddaughter Rachelle Smith.
She is survived by her dear brother Walter "Peter" White (Alice) of Las Vegas, NV, who remains a cherished pillar of the family. She is lovingly remembered by her two daughters: Tonia Elise Chambers (Kenneth) and Alicia Dickens (Johnathan), who continue to carry the mantle of her legacy. Her grandchildren Allisen Deville, Renee Smith, Isaac Wright, Patrick Chambers, and her great-grandson Rondell Smith, all of whom have been shaped by her love, faith, and fierce commitment to family. She also leaves behind a host of nephews, nieces, extended relatives, caregivers David and Heather Byrd, friends, former students, and church members whose lives have been indelibly touched by her prayers, her counsel, and her unshakable joy. In addition to her immediate family, Lura shared a bond with the extended Deville family including Paul's daughters Debra Deville, Vanessa Taylor and grandson Anthony Deville, who remain an important part of the Deville legacy.
A woman of elegance and quiet power, Lura believed in the value of education, the authority of scripture, and the importance of living a life that honors God. She lived with intention, spoke with wisdom, and loved without reservation.
Though we mourn her passing, we celebrate her homegoing, rejoicing that she is now reunited with her husband Paul and granddaughter Rachelle, resting in the glorious presence of her Savior.
Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord." – Matthew 25:23
Your work is finished, your crown awaits. Sleep in heavenly peace.
