Luther was born on October 23, 1952 in McAlester to Luther Patrick Thornton, Sr. and Virgie (James) Thornton. He was a lifelong rancher and worked for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. He enjoyed hunting, watching football and westerns, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hartshorne.
Survivors include his son, Brian Thornton of Dow, OK; daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Wes Kirby of Checotah, OK; grandchildren, Hannah (Kirby) Santillanes and her spouse, Caleb Santillanes, and Erin (Kirby) Morrison and her spouse, Landon Morrison; sister, Connie (Thornton) Greenway of Hartshorne, OK; numerous nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a lifetime of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Thornton, Sr. and Virgie (James) Thornton.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne.
