Luz Whritenour, 93 of West Palm Beach, passed away on April 9, 2024, at Trustbridge - Charles Gerstenberg Hospice Center in West Palm Beach.
Luz was born to the late Grimeneza Sare and Eduardo Zumaran in Cartavio, Peru on May 10, 1930. Luz dreamed of a better life and after learning about the United States in high school, she wanted to start a new life there. She made it her mission to emigrate to the US, which she did in the early 1960's, first to Miami and then a couple of years later to Paterson, NJ where her cousins lived.
Luz married the late Douglas Whritenour, an electronics engineer with Curtiss Wright Corp. in Paterson, NJ in 1964 and they lived together in Doug's childhood home in Haledon, NJ. Doug succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 1974, leaving Luz with three young children ranging in age from 8 years to 16 months. Again, through sheer grit and determination and a lot of hard work, Luz was successful in providing her children with those things that were very important to her, including a clean, comfortable, loving home, good food and a good education.
Luz is survived by three children: Susan O'Connor of Jersey City, New Jersey; Douglas Whritenour of Bellevue, Nebraska; and Barbara Siira of West Palm Beach, Florida. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Lillian and Reese Siira of West Palm Beach, Florida; Aedan and Arielle O'Connor of Kinnelon, NJ.
Luz was very active and was never one to sit still. After work and all her household chores were finished, she would go for an evening walk to catch up with friends and neighbors and was always willing to lend them a hand if need be. Her family enjoyed her annual harvest of fresh Jersey tomatoes and vegetables from her garden. After she retired, she continued to enjoy being active, taking long walks in the evenings and helping her neighbors. She loved dancing on Wednesday nights at the clubhouse in her community where she was known as the "dancing queen".
Luz requested that she be cremated, and that her ashes be scattered on the grave of her mother in Peru. The family would like for people to make donations in support of The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society https://givenow.lls.org/ in lieu of sending flowers.

Mom,
I miss you dearly! Thank you for all that you did to provide for us. You were tiny, but mighty. When the doctor asked me how active you were, I blew his mind. 93 yrs young and walking 4 miles every day and dancing the night away. These past few months were very hard on you, but you never gave up hope. You were a true warrior!
I love you and miss you! <3

Your daughter,
Barbara
