Homage to Our Dear Mother
Today, we pay homage to Zoé Syldia L'Hérisson, known as Lydia L'Hérisson, daughter of Frézilice Laguerre and Maria L'Hérisson. Lydia was born in Port-au-Prince on July 7, 1934, into a family of seven children: Alfred, Lucienne, Yves, Marie-José, and Denise, who have already left us, as well as Nicole, our beloved aunt who still lives among us and who, today, takes the place of a second mother for us. The second child of the family, Lydia, grew up in Port-au-Prince. She completed her primary schooling at Madame Boiron's school, near the Champ-de-Mars, where she lived with her aunt Altida. From a very young age, she proved to be precocious, lively in spirit, and of a unique character. She quickly learned cooking, sewing, and embroidery from her aunt, and later turned to commerce. She traveled throughout the Caribbean, bringing back mahogany and other rare products. Lydia gave life to a large lineage. She had nine children: Roosevelt and Marie-Yolaine, then Roland, Nicolas, Pierre-André, Marie-Mona, Nadia, Junior, and Francisco. Her children gave her twenty grandchildren:
• Barbara, Emmanuelle, and Gaëtan (children of Roosevelt);
• Antoine, Francisco, Marie-Hélène, and Patrick (children of Marie-Yolaine);
• Katricia and Kevin (children of Roland);
• Samuel, Catherine, Valeria, and Simpson (children of Nicolas);
• Abdias (son of Pierre-André);
• Widlove, Weid, and Woolf Saïd (children of Mona);
• Marcus, Jude, and Marvin (children of Nadia);
• Derek and Taylor Michelle (children of Junior);
• Loridia (daughter of Francisco).
To this descent were added fourteen great-grandchildren, testimony to the richness and continuity of her family heritage. An open-minded, generous, courageous, and humble woman, Lydia was always turned toward others. In December 1999, she decided to leave her beloved country and settle in New Jersey. There, she lived for twenty-six years with Nadia, continuing to touch those around her through her kindness, devotion, and sense of sharing. She loved to dance, to celebrate life, and to savor every moment spent with her loved ones. Her faith was sincere, her trust in God profound. Through her hospitality, her service, and her support for others, she left an indelible mark.
On September 26, 2025, in New Jersey, Lydia fell asleep to join eternal peace. She leaves us with a lesson of life: to live fully and to love one another. It is this luminous memory that we will always keep in our hearts. Today, we do not gather in sadness, but in gratitude, to celebrate ninety-one years of a beautiful life.
Dear Mother, thank you for having passed on to us the joy of living and an infinite love. You have marked our lives with your altruism, that gift which was your strength and your greatness. I was with you this summer, and you clearly told me that I would return Was it your ultimate way of preparing us for your departure, or simply your way of wanting to see me again? Today I am here, by your side, returned just as you had foreseen, to accompany you and to honor you one last time. And so, after all this beautiful journey, may you now rest in peace
• Antoine, Francisco, Marie-Hélène et Patrick (nés de Marie Yolaine);
• Katricia, Kevin (nés de Roland).
• Samuel, Catherine, Valeria et Simpson (nés de Nicolas);
• Abdias (fils de Pierre-André);
• Widlove, Weid et Woolf Saïd (nés de Mona);
• Marcus, Jude et Marvin (nés de Nadia);
• Derek et Taylor Michelle (nés de Junior);
• Loridia (fille de Francisco);
