Our mother Lydia Ybarra Torres, life long resident of Sweetwater, TX. Also lovingly known by all her grandchildren, family members and friends of family members, as Memo, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, at Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater, Tx. She was surrounded by her family as she went to be with our Heavenly Father. She will now reunite with our dad, Pete Sr. and all her departed family members. She and dad had been married for 52 years when he passed away on January 24, 1997. Mom was 97 years old, born on May 28, 1927 in Sweetwater, Tx.
Our mother was a devoted Catholic and life long member of Holy Spirit Catholic Parish, formerly named, Immaculate Heart of Mary in Sweetwater, Tx. where she was a permanent member of the Guadalupanas Society and she served in the parish council for several years. She also served as a Lector and Communion server up until she was in her mid-eighties, she could no longer serve for health reasons. Our mother was a strong Christian woman, very strong in her faith in God. She and dad were wonderful role models of how to live a good Christian life.
Mom had many talents. She was a wonderful cook/baker. Her tamales were so delicious. So many people wanted to know her recipe. She was famous for her (made from scratch) German Chocolate cake. Every time her oldest grandson Johnny came to Visit; we knew we would be having German Chocolate cake. She was a perfectionist in everything she made. She baked and decorated many weddings, cakes, quinceanera and birthday cakes for family/friends and for many people throughout the years. She also enjoyed oil painting. She painted some beautiful oil paintings for her home and for family members. Mom was a very talented seamstress. Throughout the years, she made many beautiful bridesmaids dresses for weddings and quinceaneras. She also made Halloween costumes for many lucky kids. She could pretty much sew anything. Mom loved vegetable gardening and loved to go shopping. A few of her grandkids would fore warn you not to go shoe shopping with Memo unless you wanted to spend 2 to 3 hours in the shoe department. But they loved her, so they would make that sacrifice for her.
Mom was much loved by her family. We will all miss our visits with her at her home and also all our family gatherings. We were always amazed as to how many of us (20/30 people) would fit in her kitchen and somehow managed to find a place to sit and eat. The memories of our many family gatherings will forever live within us.
Thank you Mom/Memo. We will forever love and miss you.
The family wants to extend our warmest thank you to her caregiver, Terry Morales, for helping us out in taking care of mom. Your help was much needed and appreciated. Thank you for the wonderful care you gave her and for your patience and tender care. Mom loved and appreciated you.
