Lyla L. Phillips
Bay City, Michigan
Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at Toni & Trish House following a long battle with COPD. She was born in Saginaw, MI on July 21, 1937, to George and Louise (Hoffmann) Wolpert. Lyla graduated from Saginaw High School and obtained a medical transcription certification from Bay Arenac Skill Center. She married Arlon "Sam" Phillips at Redeemer Lutheran Church on November 1, 1969. They shared 38 years of marriage before his passing in 2008.
Lyla was a longstanding member of Faith Lutheran Church in Bay City where she was active in the choir and the altar guild. Lyla enjoyed working a variety of jobs, spending several years at Northern Industrial Supply and retiring from Simmon's Jeweler's.
She enjoyed camping, reading mystery novels, crossword puzzles, crocheting and anything chocolate. Lyla was active in the lives of her family and friends, attending weddings, graduations, reunions, funerals and sporting activities, as well as theatre & choir events of her grandchildren.
Lyla is survived by her children Michael (Lori) Phillips and Michelle (Chris) Knieper; six grandchildren: Mark Phillips, Kristen and Daniel Knieper, Keith (Katie) Phillips, Ryan (Sarah) Phillips, and Ashley (Brian) Kinley; great-grandchildren: Drew, Max, Connor, Sage and Cruz.
Besides her parents & husband, Lyla was predeceased by her brothers Glenn (Arlene) and Howard Wolpert, stepson Richard Phillips, brothers-in-law - Donald and Robert (Lucina) Phillips, in-laws - Roland & Anna Phillips, and niece Connie Northrup along with many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
Lyla's family would like to thank all the staff at Toni & Trish House for their kind and compassionate care. They would also like to express sincere gratitude to the team from Residential Hospice, especially Lisa, Taylor and Kristin, for the amazing support and guidance they provided our family through this difficult time.
The Funeral Service for Lyla will be held Friday, June 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church, 3033 Wilder Road, Bay City, MI 48706. Pastor Jim Chinery will officiate, and interment will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Saginaw. Family and friends will gather at the church on Friday, June 20th from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to Toni & Trish House, 4699 11 Mile Road, Auburn, MI 48611 or the Bay Veterans Foundation.
