Lyle Verne Hoaglund, 85, of Mantorville, MN passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Mayo Clinic St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester, MN.

Lyle was born to Helen “Ocie” (Greenfield) and Joseph Hoaglund, the 7th of 10 children, on August 5th, 1940, in Red Wing, MN. Lyle’s two favorite sisters, Bette and Amy are the two remaining siblings.

He attended Montgomery High School, where he played high school sports and graduated in 1958.

In the summer of 1957, while cruising Central Avenue in Faribault, Lyle crossed paths with a beautiful young lady by the name of Theresa. After one date at Jewitt’s Point dance hall, it became obvious this was a match made in heaven if there ever was one. They were married in June of 1959. Lyle and Theresa were deeply in love and were together every day for 68 years. Before having children, Lyle and Theresa had heard that in California there were jobs paying up to $3 per hour. With that kind of money on the line, Lyle, together with his father-in-law Cootie and his brother-in-law Rollie, piled into a car and headed west. Upon arrival, Lyle walked into a power company and announced, “I’m from Minnesota and I am looking for work.” The reputation of the Minnesota work ethic was already a thing. He was put to work immediately, so he sent for Theresa who joined him via train. That was the beginning of Lyle’s long career in the power business. The first two kids arrived in California: in 1959 Kirk (Anita), and in 1960 Chris (Laurie). Eventually, Lyle and Theresa with two sons in tow, decided to return to their Minnesota roots. They had acquired a plush Volkswagen Beetle Convertible in Cali and drove that air-cooled 40hp automobile with one wheel trailer across the country like it was a walk in the park. With Lyle’s work ethic and experience he gained in California, he was immediately hired in Faribault at Northern States Power Company (now Xcel Energy). The kids kept showing up with Brenda (Bill Frame) in 1962 and Becky (Kevin Reith) in 1964. Lyle and Theresa and their ever-growing family relocated to Dodge Center in 1965 to follow Lyle’s career with NSP. Keith showed up in 1967, and shortly thereafter Lyle accepted a promotion to district foreman in Pine Island. Lyle was active in the Pine Island community and served on the city council. Under his administration, they successfully abolished the old center street parking on main street. Kim (Mike Serie), their youngest, hit the scene in 1971. The whole crew lived in a side-split home on the north edge of Pine Island, until a hobby farm came up for sale out on the river road. After relocating to the farm, Lyle tried hobby farming. He raised several head of beef cows and tried raising a few pigs.

NSP came calling with another promotion to a supervisory position around 1980 and the family moved back to Dodge Center. Kirk, Chris, and Brenda had already flown the coop. They moved into a new home on the north edge of Dodge Center and Becky, Keith, and Kim finished school in Dodge Center. Lyle accepted his final promotion to regional manager and relocated to Winona to finish out his career. After retirement, Lyle and Theresa moved back to the Mantorville/Berne area. Lyle and Keith got together and decided to peddle used cars in Dodge Center and started Center Auto Sales. Lyle enjoyed the car business, loved going to auctions and making deals.

Eventually, Lyle retired from the car business and started to help Theresa in Mantorville with Theresa’s Riverside Gifts. Lyle and Theresa have been in Mantorville for the last 20 years and both have been very involved in all things Mantorville. Lyle was on the city council and chaired the Marigold Days committee for years. Lyle beamed with pride when Theresa received the prestigious “Gem of Mantorville” award in 2025. He worked hard and played hard; he was an avid hunter and loved traveling the country with Tess in their RV.

Together, Lyle and Theresa are responsible for quite a group, and are proud to be grandparents of Kirk and Anita’s Erica and Max; Chris and Laurie’s Tony, Christie, Anne; Brenda and Bill’s Stephanie, Amanda, and Will; Becky and Kevin’s Leanne, Cassie, Lillian; Keith’s Macey (4-23-1989 to 8-7-2024), Tucker, and Melanie; Kim and Mike’s Kayla and Brady; and 18 great-grandkids with one in the hopper.

Lyle has left an amazing legacy, was extremely proud of his family, and was known in much of southern MN. His children can confirm, many, many times, and in all different locations, when introducing oneself, the question comes up, “are you related to Lyle?” This has happened in Florida, Nevada, and Guam just to name a few.

We are all extremely proud to say, “Yes, I am related to Lyle Hoaglund.”

He will be sorely missed by all that have interacted with him over the years, but no one will miss him more than Theresa and his amazing, loving family.

Lyle, welcome to God’s Country.
