Lyman W. Tanner, age 87, of
Marion, IL passed away at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2025 in the Veteran's Administration Hospital of Marion.
He was born on September 23, 1938 in
Creal Springs, IL the son of Alfred Tennyson and Ivo Fern (Owens) Tanner.
He attended school in
Crab Orchard, IL and was a graduate of Crab Orchard High School Class of 1956.
Lyman answered the call of this nation by serving in the United States Army and after his period of faithful service was honorably discharged. After that he continued to serve in the United Staes Army Reserves until he was discharged.
He was united in marriage to Freda Ann Robertson on June 21, 1963 in Herrin, IL and together they shared over 57 years of marriage until her death on December 15, 2020.
At the age of 22, he began his long career working in coal mining for the Peabody Coal Company at their Will Scarlet near
Stonefort, IL. After the mine closure he began working at Peabody's mine near
Marissa, IL until the age of 62, when he retired.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of
Marion, IL. He also was a loyal member of the United Mine Workers of America and proud supporter of the Republican Party.
In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling all across this country and was an avid wood carver.
His family was very important part of his life and enjoyed the many times they shared together and was an always interested in hearing about all the many activities going on in their lives. The many memories created will now be cherished by those he leaves behind.
He is survived by his daughter, Lana K. Parker and husband, Richard of Mayfield, KY; two grandchildren, Malese Dunevant and husband, Blake of Golo, KY and Jase Parker of Tampa, FL; great grandson, Nolan Dunevant of Golo, KY; sister, Vivian Soberg of
Marion, IL; brother, Gerald Tanner and wife, Delores of
Creal Springs, IL, other extended family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Darek Tanner; sister, Ruth Womack and brother, Dwight Tanner.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street,
Marion, IL.
A time of visitation will be at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home on Friday, December 19, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
Following the time of visitation, the funeral service will begin at 12:00 noon with Dr. Bob Dickerson presiding.
Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery of
Marion, IL.
Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside by members of the United States Army Funeral Honors Detail and the Marion V.F.W. Heyde-Pillow Post 1301 Funeral Honors Detail.
