Lynda E. Honnick, 85
of Windham, PA
Lynda E. Honnick, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2023, at the Sayre Health Care Center following a period of declining health. Born on June 28, 1938, in Cortland, NY, Lynda was a woman of exceptional generosity and spirit who touched the lives of many with her kindness and warmth.
Lynda attended Nichols High School until its closing and was in the first graduating class from Tioga Center High School in 1956. It was during her high school years, she met and fell in love with a young lad named Ray, they were high school sweethearts and sang together in multiple singing groups. On July 29, 1956 they were married at the Nichols United Methodist Church. Following graduation, Lynda worked at Iszard's in Elmira, NY while Ray was stationed with the Air Force in Iceland. As a faithful Air Force wife, mother and homemaker, she traveled the world together with her husband, serving our country and raising a family.
Many of her husband's early tours were unaccompanied and the family moved every 4 years in connection with Ray's Air Force career. Lynda treasured her family and created a loving and welcoming home wherever they were stationed. Lynda was an accomplished seamstress and took seamstress lessons while stationed in Japan. She made many custom dresses, bridal gowns and draperies. While the family was stationed in Anchorage, AK Lynda began working at JC Penney and continued her career at JC Penney in Colorado Springs, CO. In 1985 she and Ray relocated and made Windham, PA their home. She took great joy in sewing, cooking and baking for her family and friends. She loved to spend time in her flower garden. Lynda and Ray would garden together and "fill the cellar" with the bountiful harvest. The beauty she cultivated in her garden was a reflection of the beauty she cultivated in her life and relationships. She always loved to share her baked goods with others, bringing joy and sweetness into their lives.
Lynda's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a lifetime and faithful member of the Nichols United Methodist Church since the young age of 12. She served her church community in various capacities, from singing in the choir to participating in the cantata for over 40 years. Lynda also shared her faith with the United Methodist Women and helped with Bible School, touching the lives of many young people with her kindness and wisdom. Lynda found great comfort in the ministry to visiting shut-ins and those in care facilities, with freshly baked cookies to share, her kindness and love spanned for more than ten years.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 67 years, Raymond C. Honnick. Their love story spanned over six decades, filled with shared memories, laughter, and love. Together, they raised a loving family that includes their son and daughter-in-law: Michael R. and LaVon Honnick; daughter and son-in-law: Becky and Jeffrey Griffith, her grandchildren Kaitlyn, Laura, Austin and his wife Amanda, Parker and his fiancé Taylor. Lynda was a doting grandmother who cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren.
Her memory will also be cherished and missed by her sisters and brother-in-law Glenda and Donny Moore and Janice Conradson, and sister-in-law Johannah Olsher, Jacqueline Willis and SonWha Tobin. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and their families, all of whom held a special place in her heart. She was predeceased by her parents, Glenn and Esther (Osbeck) Tobin, and her brother, Warren E. "Butch" Tobin.
Lynda was a woman of great love and generosity, who lived her life with an unwavering spirit. Those who knew Lynda will remember her as a woman who was always ready to lend a helping hand, share a kind word, or offer a comforting hug.
Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Saturday, November 18th from 12 – 1 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Lynda's legacy of love, generosity, and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. She has left us with beautiful memories that will be cherished forever.
