Lynda Beatrice Thora Gerath

Lynda Beatrice Thora Hess Gerath, 85, a resident of Philippi, passed from this life peacefully Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Tygart Valley Health and Rehabilitation in Belington.
Lynda was born Saturday, July 13, 1940, in Miami, Florida, a daughter of the late James Marvin Hess and Evelyn Wista Christine Andersen Hess. On June 20, 1976, in Hamilton Township, NJ, she married Roger Stephen Gerath who preceded him in death May 10, 2016. They had celebrated thirty-nine years of marriage.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Lisa Watson and husband Clint, grandchildren, Abby Watson and Ethan Watson of all of Coalton, sister, Patti Schmidt and husband Ed of Glen Burnie, MD, and beloved cousins Daryl Chesney of Cleveland, TN, and Howard Andersen and wife Joan of Leesburg, FL.
Lynda dedicated her life to education and service. A passionate and devoted elementary school teacher, she shared her love of learning with children across several states including Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Florida, and West Virginia. Her career reflected not only her commitment to teaching but also her adaptability and enthusiasm for new experiences. Lynda also enjoyed working with the U.S Forest Service in Parsons, WV.
She was a member and currently attending the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Grafton and found joy in sharing her faith with others. Her spiritual devotion was a guiding light throughout her life and touched many who knew her.
Lynda had a zest for creativity and discovery. Introduced to travel by her parents at a young age she loved to travel and took every opportunity to discover new places. She loved gardening and found peace among flowers and plants. In the kitchen, she delighted in trying new recipes and experimenting with flavors. Crafting brought her joy as well-she embraced any opportunity to create something beautiful or unique. Reading was another cherished pastime that enriched her days. She found peace in reading the Bible and memorizing favorite passages and Psalms.
Her memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. May her legacy of faith, creativity, and kindness continue to inspire all who were touched by her life.
Lynda's request for cremation will be honored and a celebration of life is being planned.
