Lynn-Ellen Haynes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cremation Society of the Carolinas & Capital Funeral Home - Raleigh on Jan. 12, 2026.
Lynn-Ellen Rose Haynes of Raleigh,73, died of lung cancer and complications December 27 after a brief stay in Rex Hospital. She was a popular and efficient nurse whose patients loved her kindness, her cheerful disposition and her intense focus on helping other people.
Nurse Haynes, as many of her friends called her, was born in 1952 in Illinois to Russell and Mildred Rose. She was predeceased by her parents and her twin brothers Larry and Gary Rose. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Mike Haynes of Raleigh, two sisters-in-law and two nieces.
The Rose family lived in Illinois and Florida before settling in Winston-Salem and running a successful dry cleaning and laundry business. Her brothers became Winston-Salem police officers.
Lynn-Ellen graduated from Mount Tabor High School and from North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1973. During her years of long-term nursing and administration, her patients appreciated her experience, competence, and honesty with their families. For 25 years she worked at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh, first as Director of Nursing and later as Administrator of the institution before retiring in 2010.
She and Mike loved to travel to the mountains to see old friends and to Key West to enjoy the food, the atmosphere and the entertainment.
She had her likes and dislikes. She did not like camping or seafood. She did like good bars, excellent wine and good food. She was a fan of Wake Forest and N.C. State but had little time for those who wore blue uniforms.
She and Mike became regular stars at the annual DayFest musical festival near Meadows of Dan, VA. She served as chief chef, medical department provider, expert bartender, health adviser, news reporter and story teller for several housefuls of musicians and hangers-on.
She loved dogs, boats, sailing the waters of the British Virgin Islands and on Chesapeake Bay, listening to the music of Jimmy Buffet, John Prine and Lyle Lovett, and the way her husband picked his guitar. The Hayneses loved Daylight Savings Time and often held a Saint Daylight Savings Day Celebration to commemorate the event with a champaign toast at sunset.
The family did not schedule a funeral for Lynn, but will bring together a gathering of her friends to celebrate her life and tell stories on or after Saint Daylight Savings Day of 2026. The date will be announced later.
