Lynn Henry Stevens, 88, died peacefully on February 5, 2025, at his home in
Blanding, Utah after a year-long battle with cancer.
Lynn was born at home in Blanding on September 16, 1936. He is the son of Brigham and Afton Stevens and the youngest of six children. Growing up he participated in sports, scouts, hunting, horseback riding, cliff climbing, hiking, and working on the family farm.
Lynn was an excellent student and graduated from San Juan High School in 1954. He attended Utah State University, majoring in Industrial Arts Education. He was involved in student organizations, intramural sports programs, and the Army ROTC program. He graduated from the university in 1958 and was commissioned as an officer in the US Army. He later received his MBA degree from the University of Utah.
He served in the Army for 33 years rising to the rank of Major General (2 stars). He served in ordinance branch and was ranger and paratrooper qualified, and a commander at many levels. He served in Viet Nam for one year, Germany for 10 years, and the Pentagon 10 years. He and his family moved frequently, living in many different states. After retirement from the Army, Lynn was a Vice President for the Northrop Grumman Corporation. He retired from industry after nine years in 2000 and moved back to Blanding, where he served the public in many different positions. Some of his favorite work was as the Bluff Fort Board President and serving on the Blue Mountain Hospital Board. He was a true patriot and fiercely loved America.
Lynn married Nedra Wright on Aug. 21, 1956, in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. They were the parents of three daughters, Ruth, Shauna and Karen. Nedra passed away in 1996. Lynn married Lynette Olson in the Timpanogos Utah LDS Temple in 1997, adding her four children to his family.
Lynn loved to sing, dance, and tell great stories. He had a deep voice and a great laugh. He enjoyed countless hours riding horses, helping to move cattle, soaking in the beauty of nature, or working with his hands in wood and leatherwork. He was very proud of his heritage and was devoted to sharing his talents to help the people of San Juan County. He brought people together, and made things possible. He had the gift of leadership and was a great listener. A devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he served in many different leadership roles and teaching positions in the church. He had a firm testimony of his Savior Jesus Christ.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nedra, all his brothers and sisters and one grandson. He is survived by wife, Lynette, his daughters, Ruth Florang of Monroe, Utah, Shauna (Ron) Mattson of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Karen (Greg) Halversen of Renton, Washington; as well as John (Belinda)Pettitt, Jared (Jenny) Pettitt, Ben (Dee) Pettitt all of Huntsville, Alabama, and Nikki (Ben) Safrit of
Blanding, Utah; 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, at 12:00 in the Blanding Utah LDS Stake Center located at 88 West 800 North,
Blanding, Utah. Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing from 10:30-11:30 at the church prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow at the Blanding City Cemetery located at 450 N, US-191,
Blanding, Utah.
