CAMILLA DOHRER
March 30, 1930-April 24, 2024
Camilla was born March 30, 1930 to Bernetta (Green) and Art Schnoebelen in Iowa City, Iowa. She left us on April 24, 2024 in Jefferson, Iowa, at the age of 94.
Growing up, Camilla enjoyed spending time with her relatives in Riverside, Iowa, especially her Grandma Schnoebelen, Aunt Irmina and many cousins. She graduated from St. Patrick's High School and attended Iowa City Business College earning her degree/certificate in accounting. She met (her words) "a tall handsome man in his Marine Uniform strutting around" while working at the famous Barbara's Bake Shop in Iowa City. She later married him (George J. Dohrer, Jr.) and they celebrated their 62nd anniversary before his passing.
Camilla and George had four children: Tom, Mike, Pat (Mitchell), Peg and later Julia Dohrer (Tom's wife) who was like a daughter to Camilla.
Camilla was an amazing seamstress and was quilting into her 90's.
Camilla was an accountant specialist at the University of Iowa and enjoyed working with students at the Iowa Memorial Union and the professors and scientists at the Hydraulics lab. She was a proud member of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
Camilla and George were Hawkeye season ticketholders for decades. They seldom missed a home football or basketball game and, with their dear friends, Vonnie and Floyd Gould, visited every Big Ten stadium to watch the Hawks. Camilla remained a Hawkeye fan to the end, relishing in the Women's Basketball Team's success, and Caitlin Clark's achievements.
Camilla and George spent over 30 years as Arizona snowbirds. They especially enjoyed spending time with their niece, Suzanne Dohrer and her spouse, Stan Watts. They also enjoyed spending time with the Ockenfels and many Hawkeye snowbirds – eating out and watching games.
Camilla moved to The Gardens in Jefferson at age 90 and lived independently until a few months ago. She stayed abreast of politics, enjoyed any kind of puzzle, and seldom missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy.
Camilla was tragically preceded in death by George (2012), Tom (2009), Pat (2009), Julia (2013), Mike (2015) and Peg's step-son, Michael (2011).
She is survived by her daughter, Peg; her son-in-law, Tom Schmit; her grandchildren: Luke Mitchell and his friend Sarah (Cedar Rapids), A.J. Dohrer (Colorado Springs), Dylan Naylor and his fiancée Emily Evans (St. Louis), and Jackson Naylor (Colorado Springs); and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Any memorials may be made to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Iowa City; Susan G. Komen Foundation; or University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Camilla will be laid to rest at St. Vincent's Cemetery in Riverside, Iowa.
