MABEL RUTH BIRD

LEXINGTON:Graveside service for Mabel Ruth Bird, 86, will be held 2pm Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Elmwood Cemetery, officiated by Rev. S. Allison Baker. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8pm Monday, April 17, 2006, in Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Oliver Gospel Mission, 1100 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC 29202.

Ms. Bird died Friday, April 14, 2006. Born in Walland, TN, she was a daughter of the late Harry N. and Mamie Cameron Bird. Ms. Bird was a lifelong resident of Shandon; she was a graduate of USC School of Business and a member of the USC Alumni Club; and a huge Gamecock fan. Ms. Bird retired from Seibels-Bruce as Vice President after 43 years of service where she became a Certified Life Underwriter and from the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation after 7 years of service. She was a member of many organizations; former president of the Pilot Club where she was a member for 50 years; also a member of the Executive Club of Columbia; the Wha’ Cha’ Doin’ Club, Earlewood Park; and the SC Democratic Party. Ms. Bird was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia and the Oasis Club of First Baptist Church of Columbia.

Survivors are her nieces and nephews, Betty L. Fant of Lexington, Harry Cameron Lorick of Manhattan Beach, CA, James B. Lorick of Gaston, Janice Bird Yarborough of Columbia, Joseph W. Bird, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV, Fran Bird Ridley of Ithaca, NY and Col. John S. Bird, Jr., of Washington State; sister-in-law, Mrs. Joseph (Vauda) W. Bird of Columbia; and a brother, John S. Bird, Sr. of Maryville, TN; also many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ms. Bird was preceded in death by sister, Elizabeth Bird Lorick; brothers, Lt. Col. Joseph W. Bird and Paul Cameron Bird; brother-in-law, Paul L. Lorick, Sr., and nephew, Paul L. Lorick, Jr.

Ms. Bird loved her family, children, and animals. She was a kind and gentle soul, eager to help people in need. The family would like to thank Palmetto Richland Hospice and Lexington Gardens Assisted Living for their excellent care of Ms. Bird in her last year.

Ms. Bird was such a warm, friendly, caring lady who I remember fondly from First Baptist Church. I had a wonderful visit with her several years ago at the park in Shandon. She will be greatly missed.
