Memo: Hospice - Mabel Osso
Mabel Lijoi Osso, was born in Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio, Calabria, Italy on February 21st, 1920. At 6 years old she came to the United States and made Brooklyn, NY her new home along with her mother Vittoria, her father Joseph, her sister Victoria, her brothers Nick and Bruno, and then Frankie joined their family later having been born in the United States.
Mabel went on to work in the garment industry for about 30 years, during that time she met her future husband, Frank Osso. Mabel and Frank were married on May 7th, 1944, and eventually had three children, Janet, Daniel "Danny", and Doris. After their time in New York, Mabel and Frank decided to escape the weather of the Northeast and retire as snowbirds in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Mabel and Frank spent time in their garden, with friends they made in the local area, and with visits from family and friends that came from up and down the East Coast to see them.
When Frank passed on June 12th, 2002, Mabel stayed in Myrtle Beach until 2015 when she moved to Atoka, Tennessee. Amazingly, at the age of 95, Mabel had her own second-floor apartment, and while this wouldn't have been the choice for many her age, Mabel made climbing the flight of stairs look easy. While it was tough to leave the life and friends she made in Myrtle Beach, Tennessee quickly became her new home and she made friends with neighbors and members of the church she attended. Her hobbies through the years involved knitting blankets, hats, and other things for family and for donations through the churches, crossword puzzles, reading, and more. Family was everything to Mabel and she showed her love by cooking for everyone. Mabel was known for her Italian cooking but trying to get a recipe from her was not all that easy. With phrases like, "Whatever you think", "Just a little bit of this or that", or "Don't overdo it", it was tough to cook something just like Mabel. Nonetheless, many still remember at least one favorite meal that Mabel cooked for them.
Mabel was 102 years old when she passed. Over a century on this Earth and in that time, she touched the lives of so many. She was always quick-witted, funny, loving, and strong-willed. She will be missed and remembered by many.
