Mable Colleen Story, 94, of Fredericksburg, VA (formerly of Lexington, NC,) passed away peacefully from natural causes on November 1, 2025.
Colleen was born May 14, 1931, in Concord, NC to Fred M. and Telitha Burleyson Story. She graduated from Lexington High School, NC in 1949, received her BA from Montreat College, NC and MA from Appalachian State Teachers' College (ASU) in Boone, NC.
Miss Story retired in 1991 after 38 years in education where she served as a teacher of French and English in Davidson County, NC (Denton, Churchland), The Leysin American School, The American College of Switzerland in Leysin, Switzerland, and in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She also served as the media coordinator at Central Davidson High School in Lexington, NC. She served Davidson County NC Schools for 16 years as a supervisor of media, cultural arts, and foreign language, and textbook coordinator.
She was a member of the NC Association of School Administrators, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the NC Music Educators Association, the Foreign Language Association of NC, the NC Association of School Librarians, and the NC Art Education Association.
She served on the boards of Lexington, NC United Way and the Life Center of Davidson County, NC. A lifelong Presbyterian, she served in many ways at Fairmont Presbyterian Church in Lexington, NC, including as a Ruling Elder and Clerk of Session.
She traveled extensively, spending time in more than 29 countries and 19 states. She loved the theater, Nascar, reading, and hosting pool parties for her friends.
Colleen is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Gladys Story Barger; her brother-in-law, Jim Barger; and her nephew Kenneth Barger.
Colleen is survived by her niece, Krista Barger Lovell (Tom) of Fredericksburg VA; nephew Kelly Barger (Elizabeth) of Warsaw, NC; great-niece Elizabeth Lovell Milford (Matt); great-nephews Philip Lovell (Emma), Benjamin Lovell (Anna) and Michael Barger; and seven great-great nephews, whom she loved dearly.
A private family service will be held later this year.
