Sr. Madeline Henry (also known as Sr. John Berchmans Henry) died peacefully on May 31, 2024 at Sacred Heart Manor,
Hamden, CT. She was 93 years old and professed as an Apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for 72 years. Sr. Madeline, daughter of the late Charles and Madeline (Azzarello) Henry, was born on January 21, 1931 in Pittsburgh, PA. Sr. Madeline entered the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on January 10, 1950 in
Hamden, CT. She professed First Vows on August 28, 1952 and Perpetual Vows on August 24, 1955 in
Hamden, CT.Sr. Madeline was the beloved sister of Rosemarie (James) Raimondi and Lucille (the late William) Schoenig; aunt of Michael, John and James Raimondi, Madeline Banks, Christine McFarlane, Yvonne Krasny, and the late Billy Schoenig. She is also lovingly remembered by her religious family, the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and by many friends, former students and co-workers.
Sr. Madeline earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Science from Fordham University, NY; a Master's degree in Education from Duquesne University, PA and did post graduate studies at Pennsylvania State University and Iowa State University. She began her ministry in Catholic education as a teacher at Santa Maria School in the
Bronx, NY in 1956. She went on to teach in, CT, NY, PA and CA. She was most at home in a classroom, and she particularly enjoyed her years at St. Vitus in New Castle, PA and St. Charles Borromeo in Sacramento, CA. She was also a beloved teacher at Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, CT for 9 years. She served as a volunteer at Clelian Center in Hamden, CT for 16 years, and in 2017, Sr. Madeline retired to Sacred Heart Manor where she faithfully fulfilled her mission as an Apostle Adorer.
The wake for Sr. Madeline will take place on June 5, 2024 at Sacred Heart Manor Chapel, 261 Benham St., Hamden, CT from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on June 6 at Sacred Heart Manor Chapel at 2:00 p.m., followed by burial at All Saints Cemetery, North Haven, CT. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Sr. Madeline Henry to the retirement fund of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 295 Benham Street, Hamden, CT 06514.
