Madelyn Frances “Lindee” (Scannell) Mayo, of Weymouth, Massachusetts and Falmouth, Massachusetts, passed away suddenly, following a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She was 75.

Lindee was born in Boston on September 30, 1950, and was the daughter of the late John Timothy and Medelyn Rita (Bergin) Scannell. Raised in Dorchester and Weymouth, she was a graduate of Weymouth High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Boston State College, Class of 1972. Guided by both intellect and empathy, Lindee later attended Massachusetts General Hospital Nursing School, beginning a lifelong calling to care for others as a Registered Nurse.

Lindee dedicated much of her professional life as a cardiac care nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, working in a high-stress environment where her diligence, skill, and loving presence made a lasting difference in the lives of countless patients and families. In 2005, she transitioned to home-health and private duty nursing, continuing her work with the same devotion until her retirement in 2015.

In her personal life, Lindee was deeply devoted to those she loved. She and her husband were married in Scituate in 2007, after being together since 2000 and sharing a friendship that began in 1981. Their bond was built on years of companionship, laughter, and mutual care.

Music and animals were two of Lindee’s greatest passions. She loved jazz, blues, show tunes, and nearly every genre except country music. She was a devoted fan of The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Ella Fitzgerald, and many others. She and Ralph also travelled regularly to Tanglewood to attend the BSO performance of the the Beethoven 9th symphony. Her dogs, Toto and Tripper, were cherished members of her family, and she generously supported numerous animal causes throughout her life.

Lindee had a rare and beautiful gift, she truly listened. She had an instinct for discovering what someone genuinely enjoyed and bringing that joy to the surface. This was reflected in the thoughtful, personal Christmas ornaments she gave each family member, and in the carefully chosen gifts she spent so much time selecting. She delighted in creating meaningful experiences, often taking family and friends to entertainment events with front-row seating, simply to see their happiness.

She loved adventure and travel. Lindee enjoyed skiing in New Hampshire and Maine, spontaneous weekend trips, and exploring the world. She and her husband honeymooned in Greece and celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary in Paris. She shared memorable trips with her sister to the Caribbean, including Curaçao, St. Kitts, Mexico, and PlayaDel Carmen (twice), and treasured traveling with Viking Cruises.

Lindee always wanted the best, not in excess, but in meaning, care, and intention. Her life was defined by generosity, attentiveness, and love. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, beautiful memories, and lives deeply touched by her presence.

She will be profoundly missed by all the lives she touched.

Lindee was the beloved wife of Ralph K. Mayo of East Falmouth. She was the devoted sister of Maryellen Scannell of Holbrook, John Scannell and his late wife Patricia of Plymouth. Lindee was the loving aunt of Elizabeth Portesi and her husband Todd of Norwell, Patrick Scannell and his wife Rachel of North Reading, and John Scannell and his wife Amy of Alexandria, Virginia. She was the loving great aunt of Enifelo, Leo, and Rowan Portesi, both of Norwell, Maggie and John Scannell, both of Alexandria, Virginia, Emilia, Charlotte, and Liam Scannell, all of North Reading. Lindee is also survived by her stepdaughter, Danielle Nelson and her husband Dave of Madison, Connecticut.

Following cremation, services and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Lindee’s name to The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell Animal Medical Center (MSPCA-Angell), by clicking here.
