Mae Ellen Burns, 83, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. Born on March 14, 1942, in Harlan, Kentucky, Mae was a devoted daughter of the late Pearl and Sophia Davidson Brittain. Growing up as a coal miner’s daughter in the mountains of Harlan, she carried with her a deep sense of faith, family, and community throughout her life.
Mae was a proud Christian and a lifelong member of the United Pentecostal Church (UPC), dedicating her life to serving God. Her unwavering faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she touched countless lives with her kindness, strength, and devotion.
She is survived by her beloved children: Bobby Burns (Carolyn), Teresa Lush (Shane), and Amy Hageman (Greg). Mae’s legacy lives on in her 11 grandchildren: Hunter Burns, Cody Devin, Jarod Mills (Chelsea), Lindsey Swords (Cody), Jalin Jones (Austin), Paige Hall (Brian), Emily Lush, Zachary Minassian, Nicholas Minassian, Jackson Hageman, and Avery Hageman, as well as 10 great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy. She is also survived by her siblings Pearl Brittain Jr. and Barbara Burns.
Mae was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bobby “Rob” Burns; her parents; her granddaughter Nicole Burns; and her siblings Athlene Smith, Lavaughn Patterson, Minnie Bell Petrey, Martha Hughes, Mary Bowling, Wanda Moore, Thaddeus Brittain, and Harry Brittain.
Mae’s life was a testament to faith, love, and family. Her warm heart, generous spirit, and steadfast devotion will be remembered by all who knew her.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 PM Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Betts & West Funeral Home with Brother Rodney Murphy officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:30 at the funeral home and continue until the service at 1 PM. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Those wishing to honor her memory may do so by continuing her legacy of love and faith in their own lives.
