Mae Jean Goodman Dagen was born November 4, 1928, to Clay Clinton "Mike"
Goodman and Mathilda Francis "Tillie" Fritz Goodman, in Kimble County, Texas. She passed from this earth on January 23, 2026 at the age of 97. Jean was the firstborn with Lilburn Dean Goodman Walker and Larry Clinton Goodman to follow.
Jean's early years were spent on a small piece of land outside London, Texas. Her dad worked as a ranch hand and her mom worked at home. Jean attended elementary school and her freshman year of high school in London. At the end of her junior year, with only one credit to go, she went to summer school and graduated high school on June 30, 1945, from Junction High School. While in high school she worked at Moore's Five and Dime Store and the London Post Office.
On December 21, 1945, Jean married James Dagen and they made their home in Junction. They had no children but claimed all their nieces and nephews as their own. In 1948, Jean began working for Dr. John Weideman and continued at the clinic with Drs. Neigut and Ellington. Working for Dr. Wiedeman included health care for the Texas A & M Adjunct Campus in
Junction, TX during the summers of 1954-1961 which included caring for the Texas A & M football team coached by Bear Bryant.
Jean and James were both members of the Church of Christ in Junction and enjoyed teaching Bible classes and were active with the youth groups. Jean was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and American Cancer Society. As Service Chairman in 1960 she organized the first groups that made cancer dressings.
In 1963, the Dagen's moved to Dallas where they lived for 23 years. Both Jean and James attended night school to further their education. While in Dallas, Jean worked as a phlebotomist, was employed by a cardiologist and then worked at SMU's Health Center where she stayed for 13 years. Her fun moonlighting job was instructor of Medical Terminology in Adult Ed at Eastfield College. In October 1977, she began working for Dr. Paul Sanders and assisted in setting up his practice. Dr. Sanders maintained contact with Jean and James after their move to Fredericksburg.
Jean was credentialed as a Certified Medical Assistant in both Clinical and Administrative categories. She actively served on numerous boards from the American Association of Medical Assistants to the Task Force for Certification Examinations. Involvement in numerous committees took her to all parts of the nation.
Jean and James moved to Fredericksburg in July 1986. Jean began employment as office manager for Dr. Steven Hoerster the day he opened his practice. Medicine was a big part of her life from 1948 to 1998 spanning nearly fifty years as a practicing medical assistant.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, James, her parents, sister Lilburn Walker, brother-in-law G.W. Walker, and sister-in-law Pat Goodman.
She is survived by her brother Larry Goodman. In addition, much loved members of Jean's large extended family include sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews who spent quality time visiting in their Aunt Jean's home. They and other relatives in Jean's extended family loved and honored her and were blessed by her presence in their lives.
The family would especially like to thank Dr. Leo Tynan and Knopp Retirement Center staff for their loving care to Jean. You are loved and appreciated.
