Maggie Svoboda, 92, passed away on January 11, 2025, in North
Las Vegas, Nevada. She was loved by her family and cared for during her final months by her son, Bob, and grandsons, Michael and Steve. It was a blessing that she was able to be at home, and we are grateful to them for all they did for her.
She was born Magdalena Mathilde Saur on February 25, 1932, in Aalen, Germany, to Alfons Saur and Mathilde Funk. Growing up in WWII Germany, she endured unimaginable trials that shaped her life. Her resilience and strength carried her through the rest of her life.
Our mom met and married our dad, Paul Svoboda, while he was stationed in Germany. In 1953, they left Germany and were stationed in El Paso, Texas, where they spent most of their lives. Moving from Germany to the desert of El Paso was quite a shock for our mother, but she learned to love it and became famous for making some of the best tacos in town!
Our parents were married for 51 years until our dad passed away in 2000. One of their favorite pastimes was to go out dancing, whether it was the Texas two-step at the VFW or the polka at Gunther's Edelweiss. It is nice to know that she is dancing with our dad again.
Maggie had a long career in the banking industry. She worked at Bank of America for two years and spent over 30 years at El Paso National/Texas Commerce Bank. She spent many years managing accounts at the Fort Bliss branch and connecting with the German soldiers stationed there. Many of them became lifelong friends. She was also a member of the German Club at the Soldatenstube on Fort Bliss.
A devoted volunteer, Mom was active in the VFW and the American Legion Auxiliary organizations. She spent many years volunteering at the VA Hospital at William Beaumont Army Medical Center confirming patient appointments, passing out books and treats, and helping wherever she could. She loved people and helping others.
She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, making ceramics, and pursuing other creative interests. Her German dishes and cookies were always our favorites, and we are grateful she passed the recipes down to us so we can continue those traditions.
In 2012, Mom moved to Las Vegas to be closer to several of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It was wonderful to have her involved in our lives. She also loved going to the casinos and never met a slot machine she didn't like!
Maggie was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her son, Danny; and her great-grandson, Carson. She is survived by her children, Kenny, Bobby, Pat (Jerry) Gerber, and Lorraine; her daughter-in-law, Marie Svoboda; her grandchildren, Raquel (Lachlan), Kristie (Jake), Justin (Elisha), Zach (Luna), Michael, Steve, Kristopher, Aubrey (Marc), Brandon (Ashley), Bethany (Justin), and Lindsey (Steve); nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
We love you, Mom, and will miss you until we see you again. Ruhe sanft.
The burial will take place at a later date at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas.
