Marjorie Lou (Forman) Verplank was born to Fay and Edith (Kinnie) Forman on April 30, 1930, near Holbrook, NE. Marjorie was the youngest of four children. She received her education in rural Furnace County Schools and later she attended the Holbrook Public School where she graduated with the class of 1948. After her high school graduation, she started teaching in rural schools that same year. Part of her job was firing up the coal stove every morning. She also swept the floors and did other janitorial duties. Outhouses were standard equipment at every school.
Marjorie went on to further her education at the Nebraska State Normal School in Kearney, NE. Around this time Marjorie met her future husband, Lee Verplank. They were married on Valentine's Day 1956 in Cambridge, NE. Lee's job took them to Sidney, NE where they spent the rest of their lives. Marjorie continued her career in education, teaching the 4th grade at South Elementary in Sidney for the next 34 years. Marge always said that the 4th graders were the perfect age for schooling! There is rarely any place in Sidney and the surrounding areas that you can go without at least one person remembering her and saying she was their favorite teacher! Though she never had children of her own, the lives she touched while teaching was truly remarkable and each one was a child she loved.
For the past year and a half, Marjorie resided at SRMC Extended Care where she was gently cared for. Contributing to her care and doing her best to make sure Auntie Marge had the BEST quality of these later years in life, was her niece, Hillery Medina of Sidney.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Lee on February 11, 2006 – just 3 days before their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Her parents and all three of her siblings – Byran, Albert, and Mary went home ahead of Marge and we know they were waiting to welcome her with open arms.
Those left to miss and remember Marge include her many nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, three sisters-in-law, and a host of friends.
