Marc Johnson Obituary
Robert Marc Johnson, 68, passed away peacefully at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg WV on July 24, 2024. Marc was a beloved son, brother, uncle and a friend to many. He was a kind and compassionate person who worked hard to conquer many difficulties and in his later years enjoyed his relationships and helping others which brought him joy. He was predeceased by his parents, G. Robert and J. LaVerne Johnson. He is survived by his sisters Debra Lynn Johnson Horton (Keith) and Pamela Sue Collins (James). Also nephews Aaron Horton and Anson Horton (Rachel) Jonathan Collins and Daniel Collins (Emily), grand nephews and nieces Ethan, Zachary, Isabel, Cato and Desme Collins and Leonie Horton.
Marc was a gifted athlete, a talented vocalist, a hard worker and a person who tried to help others when he could. He was a good uncle to his nephews, spending time fishing, telling tall tales, and giving rides in his "Perky-Turkey" red truck.
Marc's life was not a smooth road and he struggled for many years. He grew up in Latrobe/Greensburg PA and Horseheads NY where he graduated from High School in 1973. Marc tried college but then decided to join the Army. Most of his military service was at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO where he worked in Personnel, assisting those who were being discharged back into civilian life. After his discharge he spent some time in Florida, returning to Maryland to attend Montgomery College where he graduated with his Associates Degree.
Marc often struggled to find meaning and contentment in his life. Although he worked in Montgomery County, MD for several years he seemed to feel most at home in West Virginia. He found a position with a Mental Health Organization and provided staff supervisory services for many years. He was well-liked and respected by his clients and peers. With the love and support of his family and some caring friends, he finally found some peace and comfort in Martinsburg WV. He also received much support from the VA staff and doctors as he settled into a new apartment with his 2 beloved kitties, Sammy and Fluffernutter. Marc was such a joyful "cat-dad." Sister Debi and Brother-in-Law Keith also often provided Marc with assistance and loving support when needed. Marc's nearby friends and neighbors were also very much loved and the help they gave to Marc was sincerely appreciated by him and his family.
R. Marc (our Marc) was a very special man who loved his family and friends wholly and deeply. He was a charming, funny, intelligent and sweet individual. He leaves memories as a blessing for his family and friends and we look forward to seeing him again when we are reunited in heaven.
Marc's Confirmation Verse:
2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
If you feel led to do so, donations can be made to Marc's favorite pet rescue charity: "To The ResQ" https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/ca898add-ce1b-4730-8d6b-610d4791adac. And in the section asking for "Additional Information" select the VIVA Fosters Program. This program helps care for and/or rehome Veterans' pets when their owners have to go into the VA hospital. They took good care of Sammie and Fluffernutter for us.
