Obituary published on Legacy.com by Robert Massie Funeral Home - San Angelo on Mar. 7, 2026.
Marcelina "Martha" R. Vasquez, 88, born on June 2, 1937 in Toyahvale, Texas, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on March 5, 2026. Martha lived a life centered on faith, family, and service to others, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and devotion that will be cherished by all who knew her.
On October 8, 1956, Martha married Martin Vasquez, and together they shared 25 years of marriage. Although life eventually led them on separate paths, they remained devoted to their family. In the last five years of Martha's life, they once again shared a home where they were lovingly cared for by their children, spending their final years surrounded by family until the Lord called her home.
Martha was a compassionate caregiver who dedicated many years of her life working as a CNA at St. John's, where she cared for others with patience and love. She also served as a caretaker for Outreach Services, continuing her lifelong calling to help those in need. Even after retirement, Martha remained active in her community by volunteering with the RSVP program at the City of San Angelo Senior Center, where she enjoyed ceramics, painting, crafts, and a lively game of bingo with friends, for prizes of course. She served in the RSVP program from 2005 until 2020 completing 3,970 lifetime hours.
Martha had a joyful spirit and was known for her warm and welcoming nature, she truly never met a stranger. She loved talking with people, sharing stories, and offering prayers to anyone in need. A devoted woman of faith, she was often known as a "prayer warrior," faithfully calling the prayer line and lifting others up in prayer.
She found great happiness outdoors, tending to her yard, listening to the sound of wind chimes, and surrounding herself with little trinkets that brought her joy and often became gifts to others. Martha was also affectionately known as the "bug lady," a nickname inspired by her beloved Volkswagen Beetle. She also had an unmistakable love for the color purple. Above all else, she treasured her family and had a special gift for bringing everyone together.
Martha, often called Mamo, is survived by her children, Mario Vasquez, Victor Vasquez, and Eloisa Nevarez; her grandchildren Alex Nevarez, III, Marc (Morgan) Vasquez, and Abbie Rivera; and her great-grandchildren Ruben and Marc Vasquez, Jr. all from San Angelo. She is also survived by her sisters Pauline Marmelejo and Tommy Vasquez of Lubbock, Mary Abbad and brother Frank (Elena) Rodriguez, Jr. of Pecos. Martha also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Rosa Rodriguez; her brothers, Epifanio Rodriguez and Dulce Rodriguez; and her sisters, Ethel Miller, Victoria Rodriguez, Dominga Rodriguez, and Janie Rodriguez.
Serving as pallbearers are Marc Vasquez, Ruben Vasquez, Alex Nevarez, III, Antonio Garcia, Alex Nevarez, and Jeff Simmons.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with the Rosary beginning at 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 9, 2026 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Visiting Angels for the care, compassion, and support they provided. The family would also like to extend their sincere appreciation to Jeff Simmons, her neighbor and friend, for the many years of his kindness and concern.
Martha will be remembered for her loving heart, strong faith, vibrant personality, and the way she brought people together. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit and love will live on in the many lives she touched.
