Mrs. Marcene Olivia Poss Powell, 77, left this world on January 29, 2025, in Augusta, Georgia. Born on April 10, 1947, in Washington, Georgia, Marcene's life was a testament to her intelligence, creativity, and passionate spirit.
Marcene's childhood in Lincoln County were marked by her vibrant leadership and academic achievements. As a 1964 Lincoln County Homecoming Queen and a graduate of Lincoln County High School in 1965, she was at the forefront of several school organizations. Her most significant contributions were at the local and state levels of the Future Homemakers of America (FHA).
On June 4, 1966, Marcene married her beloved husband, Herbert Louis Powell and they moved to Washington, and she began working at McGill's Incorporated, where she was not only the accountant but also the personal assistant to the late Senator Sam McGill. Together, Marcene and Herbert built a life filled with love, dedication, and shared dreams.
Returning to Lincolnton in 1986 marked the beginning of a remarkable legacy that would span the next four decades. Marcene opened her own business, Powell & Associates, Inc., in 1992, which was one of the first, if not the first, completely woman-owned businesses in Lincolnton. Under her leadership, Powell & Associates, Inc. provided accounting, real estate, and appraisal services to Lincolnton and the surrounding areas. In 2020, the firm expanded into the Metro Augusta Area and Aiken, serving the entire Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). That same year, she passed the baton to her daughter, Nancy, thus creating a second-generation woman-owned business and ensuring the continuation of the legacy she began.
Marcene's influence extended beyond her business endeavors as she served in various leadership positions, including Chairman of the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Board of Education, the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Development Authority, the Classic South Board of Realtors, and the Georgia Association of Tax Professionals. Her expertise was recognized nationally as she taught for and was a member of the National Association of Tax Professionals. Marcene pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting along with numerous designations in Accounting, Real Estate, and Appraisal.
A woman of faith, Marcene shared her musical talents as the pianist and organist at First Assembly of God, where she uplifted many with her passion for worship and music. Her personal interests included cheering on the Dawgs and engaging in the creative art of sewing, each hobby reflecting her zest for life and love for her community.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Herbert Powell; son, Scott Powell; daughter, Nancy Powell and husband, Chris Etterlee; grandchildren, Olivia Hinton and husband, Austin, Kent Powell, Alexis English and husband, Dylan, Joseph Powell, and Hayden Hohlwein; soon to arrive great granddaughter, Audrey Grace Hinton; brothers, Mack Poss and wife, Janice, and Brent Poss and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Carolyn Beggs Poss and Roy Jethro Poss, her son, Kent Poss Powell, and her brother, Glenn Andrew Poss. Marcene leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
A funeral service is planned for Sunday, February 2, 2025, at 3:30 pm at Frist Assembly of God. Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, Washington. The family will receive friends Sunday beginning at 2:00 pm until the hour of service at the church.
