Marcia Jacocks Obituary

Marcia Wells Jacocks

July 13, 1937 - February 27, 2026

Columbia, South Carolina - Marcia Wells Jacocks, 88, of Columbia died on Friday, February 27, 2026. Born on July 13, 1937, in Dallas, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Mitchell Preston Wells and Hildegarde Ewart Wells.

She spent her formative years in Denton, Texas, where she began to cultivate her love for learning and literature that would guide her throughout her life. Her academic journey led her to Tulane University and subsequently the University of North Carolina, where she earned a bachelor's degree in library science. Marcia later pursued and achieved a master's degree in library science from The University of South Carolina. While at college, she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. In 1959, Marcia married LCDR Charles West Jacocks III, US Navy (Ret.), embarking on a remarkable journey together that spanned 64 years.

Marcia's professional life was marked by a deep commitment to education and the nurturing of young minds. As the librarian at Hammond Lower School, she inspired countless children, instilling in them a passion for reading. A devoted member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Marcia's faith was a source of strength. Her intellect and wit shone through in her love for Bridge, where she was an avid player, participating in numerous Bridge groups. Marcia enjoyed playing the piano and loved reading, especially Agatha Christie mysteries. She will be remembered for her devotion as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her life was a testament to love, family, and the enduring power of education.

She is survived by her sons, Dr. Charles West Jacocks, IV (Carrie), Dr. Mitchell W. Jacocks, Sr. (Ramona), and William Mason Jacocks (Melissa), grandchildren, Dr. Charles Edward Jacocks (Holly), Richard West Jacocks, Pharm.D. (Meghan), James Preston Jacocks, Ann Grace Jacocks, M. Wells Jacocks, Jr. (Sarah), Cantey Mason Jacocks, Preston Thomas Jacocks, and Hannah Diane Jacocks, great-grandchildren, Aden, Katherine, Owen, Henry, Graham, Embry Jane, and Callahan Jacocks, as well as her sister, Hilde Wells Slocum. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Mitchell Ewart Wells.

The service for Mrs. Jacocks will be held at 11:30 o'clock, Friday, March 13th, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat St., Columbia. Interment will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Barr Center of the church beginning at 10 o'clock.

The family requests that donations be made to the Anglican Relief and Development Fund, P.O. Box 645354, Pittsburgh, PA 15264.
