Marcus McCormick Obituary

July 24, 1954 - January 24, 2024
It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of Marcus (Mark) Wirt McCormick Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Mark departed this life on January 24, 2024, in Lakeland, Florida, just months shy of his 70th birthday. Born in Phoenix, Arizona, on July 24, 1954, Mark's life was a testament to his enduring faith, unwavering commitment to his family, and his passion for serving others. Mark leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his devoted wife of almost 50 years, Dee Dawn McCormick. They were married May 17, 1974 in Stamford, TX. He was a guiding light and hero to his daughter Cori Matsakis and her husband Louie, and their children Michael Elias (15), Nicholas Elias (13) and Maia Elise (11). His son Casey McCormick, with his wife Brittany, will fondly remember his father's wisdom and strength, as will their children Gabriel Wade (12), Ava Danielle (10), Jeremiah James (5) and Benaiah Luke (3). Mark's brother, Steve McCormick (Monica), and sister-in-law, Jennifer Price (Steve), along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, also mourn this immense loss.
Mark was predeceased by his father Marcus McCormick, Sr., mother Nadra (Orick) McCormick, sister Leona (McCormick) Henly, brother Mike McCormick, nephew Stephen Dean McCormick, father-in-law Frank Moore, mother-in-law Vola Moore and brother-in-law Gough Moore. Their reunion in eternity brings a measure of comfort to those grieving his departure.
A man of many talents and profound faith, Mark attended West Texas State University from 1972 to 1974, where he showcased his athletic prowess in football. His dedication to public service was evident in his tenure as a State Trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety from 1980 to 1987. His calling to serve God led him to an Associate's Degree in Bible Studies from the Midwest Bible Institute in Houston, Texas, and his ordination as a minister through the Full Gospel Evangelistic Association (FGEA). Mark, alongside his family, committed in serving in missionary work with Agape Missions in Brazil, South America, and directing a Home for Abandoned Children from 1989 to 1992.
Furthering his commitment to ministry, Mark earned a Bachelor's Degree in Christian Ministry from Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas. He served with heart and soul as an Associate Pastor and Youth Pastor at People's Church in Dalhart, Texas, extending his pastoral care as a hospital chaplain and as President of Good Samaritan Christian Services. His educational journey culminated with a Master's of Education from West Texas A&M University, leading to a fulfilling career as an educator and administrator with the Dalhart Independent School District.
An avid fisherman, gardener, and outdoorsman, Mark's love for nature was only surpassed by his love for children. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life and imparted wisdom and kindness wherever he went. Mark also had a unique passion for humor, often sharing quips and dad jokes from the pulpit, eliciting eye rolls and laughter from his children and grandchildren. He once humorously noted, based on advice from a special friend, that it was ok to miss church for a fishing trip, provided he caught as many souls for the Kingdom as he did fish.
Mark's love for children and community was unparalleled. His legacy is one of laughter, love, and the profound impact of a life dedicated to faith and service. The family will announce arrangements for a Celebration of Life when we will honor Mark's remarkable journey on this earth.
In his memory, we cherish not just what he did, but who he was – a man of faith, integrity, and boundless love. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made with reference
