Mardecia Chatham of Rutherfordton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born February 18, 1968, Mardecia grew up in Cherryville, NC and was preceded in death by her father George Clinton Bo Roberson, her mother Linda Heavner Huss, her brother Tim Roberson, and her brother Mitch Roberson.
Mardecia moved to Rutherfordton, NC twenty-nine years ago when she married her husband, Mike, and joined the membership of Piedmont Baptist Church. Mardecia was a gifted artist, creating beautiful flowers with tole painting; and she created a beautiful Angel flower garden to enjoy from their back porch. She loved being outside surrounded by green pastures, her Blue Ridge Mountain view, her dachshunds and her miniature donkeys. Mardi especially loved going to work in the morning, rolling out of the driveway in her white Jeep, with "Old Time Rock and Roll" cranked up. Through the years, Mardecia was known to share her faith, and witness by giving a red glass bead from the palm of her hand, with encouragement to many and a statement of faith, 'Look what He went through'.
She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Michael Chatham of Rutherfordton, her son Tyler Chatham and wife Ashley of Spartanburg, South Carolina; her daughter Ashley Chatham Koch and husband Aaron of Rutherfordton and son Aaron Chatham, also of Rutherfordton.
Mardecia absolutely loved being Ty's Mom and her greatest joy was being "Mimi", a grandmother to the two lights of her life who survive her: grandsons Camden Chatham and Caiden Chatham of Chesnee, South Carolina. Mardecia is also survived by her sister Renada Tucker and husband Kenneth of Lake Norman, her sister Sheree Stroud and husband Kelly of Lincolnton, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 PM on Friday June 6, 2025 at Piedmont Baptist Church on Maple Creek Road, Rutherfordton, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 3 PM prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations to Piedmont Baptist Church, PO Box 162, Rutherfordton, NC 28139.

There is so much to say about such a precious lady that loves the Lord as dearly as Mardecia does. Her beauty truly came from within her soul. Mardecia never realized just how Beautiful and special she is. When we were growing up Mardecia would get up around 2:30-3am with her Dad,(BO Roberson) and head out in the freezing cold with her dad to deliver papers. She was country before country was cool. Mardecia and Bo would turn on their country music and grab some peanuts and a cola to munch on during their deliveries. I've loved Mardecia and Renada since I met them in grade school. I don't know what I would have done if it wasn't for them when I had no where to stay or I had nothing to eat. So thank you Mardecia and Renada for taking me in and including me in your family, I truly felt just like a sister. I had so much fun with these special girls and learned a lot about God because they took me to church with them. I had never been to church when I started going with them to their little church and it taught me that God loved me. Thank you dear beautiful precious Angel Mardecia for tolerating me all the year's that you, Renada and your Dad let me live with y'all. I haven't forgotten all the things Linda did for me as well.
