Margaret Isabel (MacQuarrie) Egan, a beacon of love and strength, passed away on April 28, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of James Egan for 68 years and cherished mother of 13 children. She was a resident of Carver for the last 26 years, formerly of Rockland.
Born in Port Hood, Nova Scotia on November 20, 1933 she was the loving daughter of the late Christina Mae (McKinnon) and Edward MacQuarrie. Margaret grew up in Cape Breton. She moved to Newton in 1953, married James Egan in 1955 and raised a family together. Margaret's life centered on her faith and spending time with her children, grand-children and great-grand children. Her capacity to love was immense.
Margaret was an avid baker who shared her specialties with family, friends and neighbors. Her baked goods were coveted at the Holy Family Bazaars. She volunteered her time at Holy Family Church and School. Margaret was also passionate about sports; followed all the Boston sports teams rarely missing a game. She also enjoyed playing cards with her siblings and family.
She is survived by her devoted children, Mary Spring of Carver, Barbara Flavell of Carver and son-in-law Richard Flavell, Michael Egan and his wife Janalyn of Saint Charles, MO, Margaret Egan of Carver, Elizabeth and Douglas Booth of Newport, RI, Catherine Kenny of Plymouth and son-in-law John Kenny, Patricia Keel of Carver, Christina and Steven Dunn of Quincy, James Egan and Gibbs Saunders of Quincy, and Shawn Egan of Manchester, NH, and daughter-in-law Amber Egan. She was predeceased by her sons John Egan, Joseph Egan, and Thomas Egan.
She was a cherished grandmother of 27 grand-children and great grand-children along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins here and in Canada.
She was the loving sister of five brothers and 6 sisters; survived by Thomas and (Yvonne) MacQuarrie of Toronto and Sadie MacQuarrie, Kaye MacQuarrie of Cape Breton, and sister-in-law Carole MacQuarrie of Ontario. She was predeceased by John and (Dodie) MacQuarrie of Cape Breton, Donald MacQuarrie of Calgary, Greg and (Mary) MacQuarrie of Sydney, Edward MacQuarrie of Ontario, Mary and (Cecil) MacLean of New Waterford, NS, Bernice and (Russell) Brown of Toronto, Anna and (Gerry) O'Quinn of Halifax, NS, and Willena MacQuarrie of Cape Breton, NS.
She is also survived by her brother-in-law William Egan and his wife Kathleen of Whitman. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Carol Freeman of Tampa, Florida and her sister-in-law Kathleen Harkins of Whitman.
Services to honor and celebrate the life of Margaret Egan will be held on Friday, May 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sullivan Funeral Homes in Hanson (2 Maquan Street, Corner Route 14&58). A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30AM at Our Lady of the Angels in Hanover (392 Hanover Street, formerly Saint Mary's). Burial will immediately follow at Holy Family Cemetery in Rockland (403 Centre Avenue).
Margaret Egan will be profoundly missed, but her spirit and strength will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know her.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to be made to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society at Holy Family Church, 403 Union Street, Rockland, MA 02370.
