"I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord, then to dwell in the tent of wickedness."
Psalms 84:10
Margaret Hurt Rixey, age 91, was called home to spend eternity with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, July 1, 2023. She was born May 2, 1932 to the late William R. Hurt and Ludie Spinner Hurt. She was the wife of the late Harry Junior Rixey. She was also preceded in death by: one daughter Ethel Alston; one son Cecil Rixey; one brother Charles Hurt, Sr; two sisters Eleanor Jackson and Sarah Hurt; one brother-in-law Delmar Jackson, Sr; one sister-in-law Rachel Hurt; one niece Gloria Smith; and one nephew Charles Hurt, Jr.
Margaret joined the Poplar Spring Baptist Church and was a faithful member serving on the usher ministry and the Gospel Chorus under the direction of Rev E. McKinley Taylor.
Margaret was a gifted and skillful seamstress. She was in her element when she was at her sewing machine and could make/sew practically anything. If you wanted something made, fixed or altered she was the one. She is well known in Bedford and surrounding counties and as far as Europe. She made choir robes, robes and capes for Ministers as well as scarfs and other things to decorate the church, wedding and prom attire.. She lived a long life and she's resting with her Heavenly Father and sizing him up to see what she's going to sew for him.
Left to cherish her memories are her children Lewis Hurt of Herndon, VA, Harry Rixey and Karen of Forest, VA, James Rixey of Bedford, VA, Annette and Cecil Spinner of Bedford, VA. One sister Geneva Payne of Roanoke, VA, one brother George and Harriett Hurt of Big Island, VA, ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
