Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Margie Mae Scharnitzky Gilmer "MaeMae", age 82.
Mae was born on October 15, 1942, to William and Bessie Scharnitzky. She was 1960 graduate of Academy of Richmond County. She attended Augusta College and then graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1964 with Bachelors of Education. She went on and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1985 with her specialist degree.
Mae worked for the Richmond County Board of Education for 40 years as a teacher. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mae loved to spend her time sewing, quilting, and knitting along with genealogy.
Known as MaeMae by everyone, she is survived by her children: Vincent Lawrence (Kristan), Elizabeth Gilmer-Brown, Rebecca Franklin-Blume (Benjamin); grandchildren: Kayla Stanford (Jared), Kaitlyn Martin (Allen), Jackson Gilmer, Olivia Franklin, Broxton Franklin, Spencer Franklin; great-grandchildren: Wesley Stanford, Wyatt Stanford, and Charlotte Martin; her sister: Hannah Singletary; and her beloved dachshund Bella.
She was preceded in death by beloved husband, Henry Lawrence Gilmer; her parents, William and Bessie Scharnitzky; her brother, Arnold Scharnitzky (Martha); and her son-in-law Doug Brown.
The funeral service will be held Friday, August 22, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Roy McVeigh officiating.
