Margret E. (Post) Moore Major, U.S. Army (Retired) (Retired) Major Margret E. (Post) Moore, of Palmyra, Virginia, formally of Mingo Jct., Ohio, after courageously battling cancer, passed away at her home on February 20, 2012. Born in Copen, W.Va. on July 31, 1937, she was 74 years old.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Stuart A. Moore, step-father Winnie Stanley, and two brothers, Charles Stanley and Roger Stanley. Margret was a graduate of Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH, in 1984 receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN). She graduated with her Master's from The University of Alabama

Huntsville in 2001 as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) specializing in Cardiac Critical Care. She joined the Army Reserves at the age of 51 as a BSN in critical care, becoming one of the oldest persons to complete Basic training. Upon completion, she entered into Active Duty and was stationed at USAHC-SB Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and held the position of Clinical Head Nurse. She transferred to Kitzingen in Wurzburg, Germany and soon deployed to Bosnia Herzegovina in support of Operation Joint Endeavour. She was head nurse of the MASH unit.

After returning to the United States, she retired from the Army and was employed at William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) in El Paso, Texas. Margret was the first NP with full privileges to admit patients and write prescriptions, paving the way for NP's everywhere. Margret retired from WBAMC in August 2010 at the age of 73. She is survived by her mother, Helen Cummins of Palmyra, Va., and her brother, Gary Lee Stanley (Mary Lou) of Steubenville, Ohio; seven children: Michelle J. Artman (Kevin) of Plano, Texas, Karen M. Soto, of Palmyra, Va., Audrey H. Gleske (John) of Gore, Va., Stuart A. Moore, Jr. (Carolyn) of Guntersville, Ala., Gayle R. Brancazio (Rick) of Mingo Jct., Ohio, Stanley C. Moore (Nancy) of Manassas, Va., and Shawn R. Moore (Kathleen) of Rutland, MA; 24 Grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were made by Sheridan Funeral Home, 6093 Venable Rd., Kents Store, VA 23084 (434) 589-8374. Viewing will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 15 Dogleg Rd., Palmyra, VA 22962, with a mass to follow at 12:00pm. Reception to follow mass in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org or Hospice of the Piedmont at www.hopva.org. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors will be scheduled at a later date.
