Marguerite J. DeVaughn, 96, peacefully passed away on 24 July 2024, surrounded by family members. Marguerite "Sue" was born in Rocky Mount, NC on 16 January 1928, but was a Norfolk, Virginia Beach, native.
She is predeceased by her husband, Phillip T. DeVaughn 34 years ago, her parents, Sam and Maggie Groome, and six siblings.
She was he baby of the family and lived the longest. Sue graduated from Maury High School and met Phil when he was stationed in Norfolk aboard ship and they married in 1947.
Sue is survived by two children, Suzanne Durbin and Phillip DeVaughn (Frances), two grandchildren, Caran Jimeniz (Mike) and Alicia Wigfield (James Kelly) and 5 great-grandchildren, Samuel, Grace, Charlotte, Gabriella and Madalyn, two step-grandchildren, Carrie Kline and John Durbin, and their children Madison and Ian, and many nieces and nephews and extended family. She was a member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church since 1964 and had many church family members. She was Navy wife for 20 years and loved traveling back and forth across the country to visit family when we were stationed on the West Coast. When Phil retired in 1963, the family moved back to Virginia to be close to her large family. She received her AA in business when she was 45 years old. She worked for the Virginia Beach School System and was only secretary for Lynn Haven Elementary School for many years. She retired after 25 years.
She loved her job and had many friends from her time there. Gardening was her passion and every spring new flowers were planted at her house and her sisters houses. She loved quilting, tole painting and any type of craft. After Phil's death, she and her best friend Frances McClenny. Traveled extensively and when she was not traveling with her, she was taking her older sister south to Florida for the winter months to stay with their brother. She also traveled to Europe and many other places with her niece. The surviving sisters and friends who were widowed formed the Merry Widows club, with sweatshirts designed by her nephew, and they had lunch together every Friday for years. Mom will be missed by all who knew her. She never lost her smile or her kindness and love for others. There was a huge celebration in heaven when she got there.
On Sunday, July 28, 2024 the family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown, Princess Anne Chapel from 2-3PM, with a service beginning at 3PM. Burial will follow at Colonial Grove Memorial Park.
